the kitchen was quiet. we just finished the funeral for the people that were killed in the barn.
daddy was missing. beth was in shock. matt and maggie were trying to get her to wake up.
"so, you seriously gonna go after this guy with everything that's going on?" shane's voice cuts through the wall.
"he's right," lori supports. "this is not the time to head off. you don't always have to-"
i stand up from my chair, careful that my boots don't make noise on the floor when i walk over.
"I'm not arguing," rick cuts her off. it's the least i can do for hershel after we-"
"after we what?" shane questions with a scoff. "after we what?"
shane walks through the living room and i follow. i stand on the porch and he stops after going down the stairs.
"something you need?" he asks, not turning to look at me.
i lean against the railing of the porch. my dress flows in the breeze.
"speak up or i'm walking," he informs.
"you shot more people than the others did at the barn," i recall faintly. "like you were angry."
"those walkers are dangerous. in a few years, you'll thank me for what i did."
"so, you were saving us?" i question.
shane finally turns around. he hooks his thumbs in his pockets and rests his weight on his left leg.
"yeah. i was saving all of us. your family included."
i tap my finger on the wooden rail and settle in his words for a few seconds.
"were you saving carl when you killed otis?"
shane tilts his head. "excuse me?"
"if you killed to protect us.. did you kill to protect him?" i clarify. "is that why otis is dead?"
shane runs a hand over his head and shakes in denial. "you don't know what you're talking about, kid."
without another word, shane walks away. i watch him go before turning on my heel and walking back inside.
".. needs a father like you. around. alive. not running off solving everyone else's problems," lori continues to berate rick.
"it's not just his problem i'm trying to solve," rick argues.
i roll my eyes and cross my arms over my chest.
these people just killed our friends and family in the barn and they were arguing over their own problems? how selfish.. had they even checked on their own group member, carol, who lost her daughter?
"we need hershel for the baby," rick explains to lori. "i'm going after him."
i return to my stance from earlier and lean against the doorframe. when rick looks away from lori, his eyes lock on me and he flinches in surprise.
lori goes to say something, but she sees me as well.
"ellie, honey-" lori begins.
"you people killed my family and friends. the least you can do is show some sympathy and bring my dad back home," i state with a glare.
"listen-"
"no," i deny rick. "you listen. shane put us in this mess. you're the leader. clean it up or else."
"or else?" lori repeats, shocked that i would dare try and threaten them.
i glare at the couple even harder.
"or else you can forget about having a place to sleep and you can all die out there," i spit and push my way through them. "and your bastard baby can go to hell, too."
