Bangs and crashes woke Sarah up that night. She shot up in bed, wand in hand. Fred's arm, which previously was slid around Sarah's waist, slumped into her lap.
The room flashed as if there was a lightning storm going on outside. Sarah knew better than to assume that. Sarah, heart racing, turned to Fred.
He could sleep through a potential attack on the shop but couldn't sleep through her nightmares. If Sarah hadn't bigger things to be concerned about, she might have been annoyed.
Sarah slid out of bed, taking rapid steps towards the window. She pushed the curtain aside, but only slightly, just in case anyone was watching. Green flashes lit up the alley further away from the shop, closer to the Leaky Cauldron.
"Fred, wake up!" Sarah yelled, scrambling for her trainers and a jacket.
Groggily, Fred leant up on his elbow, squinting at Sarah in the dark, "What's wrong?"
Rather impatiently, Sarah chucked at a jumper at him, "Listen! Can't you hear it? There's death eaters down the alley. We have to be ready, just in case..."
That seemed to get Fred moving. He got out of bed as he pulled the jumper over his head. Sarah pushed open the bedroom door as Fred pulled his trainers on, met by the sight of Capri. She was adorned in a jacket and trainers, too.
"Is George up?" Sarah asked, as she rushed past Capri to check the locks of the flat door.
"Yeah. Can you see what's going on from your window?" Capri called, but she headed into Sarah's bedroom anyway.
The locks were fine. Sarah turned on her heels and headed back to her bedroom to watch what was happening, "Yeah. Kind of."
Sarah and Fred met Capri by the window.
"Is that Ollivander's?" Capri asked.
"Looks like it," Fred answered darkly, a stoic expression on his face.
George appeared from his bedroom, joining their vigil.
"That's where we got our wands - " George stated quietly, " - All of us."
Sarah frowned, turning to Fred, "First Florean's, and then this. Do you think we should go help?"
Fred shook his head, "Not until the coast is clear. We'll be outnumbered."
Sarah turned back to the scene. Death Eaters were flying through the shop in jets of black smoke. The windows were shattered. The door was off its hinges.
Suddenly, all the death eaters flew out the shop, floating momentarily in the air above Diagon Alley. All together, they pointed their wands.
The alley lit up bright orange as Ollivander's shop was set ablaze. The flames quickly swallowed the building. The Death Eaters made quick departure, their black smoke trails disappearing into the night sky.
"George, send a patronus to Remus. Capri and I will go down and extinguish the building. Maybe, just maybe, Ollivander can still be saved," Fred ordered.
Sarah frowned but didn't question his judgement. George nodded, heading into the living area of the flat with haste. Capri zipped up her jacket as she followed Fred out the door.
Sarah stayed near the window, watching as Fred and Capri approached the shop at a jog. The flames lit up the entire alley, including them. They both had their wands out, shooting jets of water at the blazing building.
George had returned, eyebrows furrowed with worry as the fire roared back in aggression, despite Fred and Capri's attempts to extinguish it.
"Mum and the rest are coming to Diagon Alley tomorrow," George told her.
