Sarah walked to her first music lesson of the year, passing students who were heading to their lessons also. She was excited to see a familiar face.
Sarah walked down the Grand Staircase and into the music classroom, where a trumpet melody could be heard. She was excited, as this wasn't just muggle music, but wizarding too.
The room was similar to an auditorium, with a large stage in the middle. It was surrounded by seats, which ascended the further away from the stage it was. Sarah sat near the back, looking for someone she knew.
Finally, she found him. One of her best friends. He sat on the highest chairs, head bent low as he scribbled in his notebook. He glanced up, his blonde hair hiding his brown eyes.
"Hey, River!" Sarah greeted, dropping into a seat next to him. He looked up, a smile appearing on his face.
"Oh, look what the cat dragged in," River replied, his lips twitched.
"Mmm, thought you'd be glad that I was actually here," Sarah replied.
Sarah took singing lessons, she always had. Her foster parents wanted to get her out the house more often, which Sarah supposed was the reason she was allowed to do them. That was why she took music.
Her mother was a singer, yes, but Sarah had no clue whether she'd gained a singing voice from her genes or practice. She liked to think practice, but she would never know.
It took Sarah a while to decide her two options, music mostly because she didn't want to end up like her mother. Addicted. Alone.
That's what she'd seen in the bogart last year and it gave her nightmares for weeks.
"What else did you take?" River asked her.
"Sports," Sarah replied, which River didn't seem to surprised about that. Sarah enjoyed quidditch.
The lesson started when Professor Bobes wandered in. He was the lanky, tan music and sports professor, which meant Sarah had him for both of her options.
"Ok, students! I'm going to introduce to you the Sonograms, holographic images that produce sound. You can use these to get studio-quality music without the studio - " Professor Bobes began, staring up at the students from the stage.
It was complicated magic, so they didn't get to do practical on their first lesson. They learnt the purposes, how to produce them and famous instances that Sonograms were used. Sarah could barely keep up with the notes, but she need them for that 1" paper she had to write.
The bell rang, signalling the end of lesson. Luckily, Professor Bobes had let them out early due to productive work, so Sarah reached her second lesson quickly. Sarah jogged down the stairs to the dingy, gloomy dungeons. She walked past a gang of Slytherins hurriedly, hoping her friends had been let out early also.
Sarah halted by the Slytherin common room entrance, which was lit with green fire in braziers and highlighted with silver. Curved, stone stairs led to the door, dark mahogany with engraved snakes. Sarah was glad she hadn't been in Slytherin, as the entire feeling of the house sent shivers down her spine.
She continued walking to the potion's classroom, attempting to push away the negative thoughts. It always happened when she was down here, causing her to wonder whether they'd put some enchantment up. Fortunately, her thoughts were interrupted by someone.
"What's a lovely lady like yourself doing down here all alone?" Fred Weasley asked her, falling in step beside her. Sarah smiled, stopping outside the potion's classroom.
"Professor Bobes let us out early, what about you? Where's George?" Sarah asked, leaning against the wall and crossing her arms over her chest.
"I wasn't in lesson. George got caught by a teacher. I ran," Fred replied, a smirk playing at his lips.
