"Sorry?" Alex was confused and pulled away slowly from her mom. "What is it exactly mom?"

"Maybe...maybe I've hidden this for long enough now." Lyla said wiping her face.

Alex adjusted on her seat, facing her mom.

"Alex.." she paused.

"Yes mom ." Alex nodded attentively.

"I'll just have to start this from the beginning." Lyla said, flashing back to old memories. "Your father and I..long before you were born...we weren't even married then. I met him when I came here, Vancouver, on a catering contract for a wedding. I actually wanted to live a simple human lice despite not being human myself. He was an invited guest at the wedding. He called it love at first sight but I was only attracted to him the first time. We bumped into each other while I was carrying a tray of drinks and ended up spilling the drinks all over him. I apologized but he just laughed it off and walked away. I remember turning back that day only to find him still looking at me." She was smiling as she continued.
"Two days later we met at a park again and that was how our friendship started. I lengthened my stay here because of him and decided to settle here with him so when he proposed I said yes. Even then, I didn't know he was a witch and he didn't know I was one either. I stayed at his place one night and in the kitchen I carelessly threw a lot matchstick into a pile of old papers next to me. It caught fire and out of fear I kicked a bottle of ketose close by. It's content spilled on the floor and the fire increased. I didn't know which to do, sage myself using my powers and rusk blowing my cover or burn in that fire. Luckily you father came on time, not having my level of patience, he uttered a spell and the fire went out. That was the last thing I expected but he jist took me out of the kitchen without a word. We had a long talk that night as he told me his whole truth. I couldn't hold back anymore and he was surprised to know we were of the same kind. But the happiness didn't last. He took me to his family and it didn't take me long to know that they belonged to the Dark Side. It was hard to accept the single difference that stopped out union so your father decided to leave his realm for me. It caused great discord as his father held a notable position in their realm, but your father couldn't care less. He went against everything and everyone, even hus family, just to be with me. He switched to our realm, light. Though he wasn't fully accepted, he proved his loyalty and live when he fought against his own people the time they decided to strike again. They had been throwing threats for ages but the time your father left their realm they put up a big and serious fight, almost a battle.
Before the clash we got married and had you. I was still pregnant with Stephanie when he went to fight for our realm and he returned badly hurt and unconscious. He didn't wake up for three months but he woke up ok the day of my delivery. In hus last moments on his death bed, he blessed you two and said something to me, 'keep them strong and make them brave'. He went to sleep after that but never woke up. Now I see why he said that." Lyla was already in tears.

Alex felt like she needed more than a moment to let everything sink. No, thus was too much. Why did it all have to come now? Now, when she thought she was already thus close to restoring everything with the rest of her members. And now, this?

When she felt a little near stable, she finally asked, "So thus means, we still share a relationship with Darkness?"

Her mom looked at her. "Dear, this us the reason I wanted to keep you and your sister away. They didn't even spare your father, how much more you? And now, my dear Stephanie. I knew it, u knew it all along. It's either they take you back or they take you out of their way. It's what they did to my husband." Her face was soaked with tears already.

"But why did you hide all of this mom?"  Alex asked her mom, she just couldn't place all the things she had come to know just that day in one single file in her head. First they learnt they were not the chosen ones, then her sister is actually chosen and not her, now she shared a relationship with Darkness. It was too much.

"I'm sorry my child, I was scared they'd take you."

"But would hiding it all from me save me from them? It's not like I would have willingly given myself to them if I'd known the truth mom."

"I'm really sorry my child." Lyla's eyes were red and swollen a bit already.

Alex gave a tiny smile and wiped her tears. "It's alright mother. We should sleep. Goodnight." Saying that she went upstairs to her room.
