AMY
Daniel's arm wrapped around my stomach as his head rested in the crook of my neck as we slept peacefully after returning from the hospital.
I was starting to get sick each evening; instead of the traditional morning sickness, I was getting deathly nauseous on a night time. I was just hoping that the medication I was prescribed in Perth would help with this, as it was making me feel so weak and tired.
As we slept, my phone buzzed on the side table, echoing in the night air as it was the only thing which lit up the room.
Daniel shuffled behind me, opening one eye as he squinted to see where the noise was coming from as I rubbed my hand across my face before grabbing my phone, answering the call without scanning my eyes over the screen to see the caller ID.
"Hello?" I answered with a groggy tone, rubbing my eyes and sitting up which caused Daniel to also wake, sitting up himself as he continued to wrap his arms around me.
"Hi, sweetheart." My mom's voice sweetly sang over the phone as I started to wake myself up.
"Is everything alright, mom?" I asked her as Daniel pressed a kiss to my shoulder.
"Darling, your nan has passed away." Her soft tones enveloped me as I didn't know what to say or how to react, my trembling nerves thumped in my body as I raised my hand and wrapped it across my mouth. "I can't imagine how you're feeling right now, angel. If you want to come to say goodbye to her you can, if you feel as if you've made your peace then go back to sleep."
She notified me, giving me full control on how I wanted to view this situation. I knew that this wasn't the first phone call my mom had had to make over the years; she would often tell me about how awful it was to have to notify a person that their loved one had passed away.
"I'll be there." I managed to mutter before hanging up the phone call and throwing my phone into the satin sheets which caressed over mine and Daniel's bodies. I placed my head into my hands as I cried, audibly blubbering as my body shook.
Daniel didn't need to be informed of why I was crying the way I was, he just cuddled into me tightly as he supported me whilst I had my time to grieve.
"I'm so sorry, gorgeous." His sweet Australian voice travelled over to me as I prized my head out of my hands and looked behind me slightly to view his tired complexion; the dark circles hanging under his eyes even more prominent than they had been since we arrived here, jet lagged and sleep deprived.
"I miss her already." I choked out as Daniel sat up further, enveloping me in his large arms as he pulled me closer into his exposed chest, our bare skin colliding with each other as if we were huddling for warmth.
**********************************************
One by one, we entered the room to say goodbye to my nan.
My dad had decided to go first, informing us that he needed to get it over and done with as he completely broke down to everyone present.
My mom had been with her when she passed away, holding her hand and telling her stories of when we were little children, comforting her as she completely slipped away. My mom held it together very well when she told us, only letting a few tears slip away as she took full responsibility to be there for my dad who was not dealing with the situation as best as he could've.
It was finally my turn to enter the room as I turned back around to look at Daniel. I extended my arm over in his direction as he removed his back away from the wall and walked over towards me, entwining my hand with his.
"Did you want to come in?" I asked him as he nodded, contemplating for a few seconds before he made his final decision.
As I entered, I slowly made my way over towards the lifeless body which lay in the bed. The wires had been removed and the noise of her breathing had completely vanished.
