The four took the little girl back to the Wheeler's basement, sitting her down on the couch. ''Is there a number we can call for your parents?'' Mike asked.
''Where's your hair? Do you have cancer?'' Dustin asked, his eyes widening and then felt a mild slap on the arm.
''Dustin!'' came Jess's voice angrily, glaring at her brother as he rubbed at his now sore arm.
''Did you run away?'' Lucas asked.
''Are you in some kind of trouble?'' Mike asked.
''Is that blood?'' Lucas asked, gesturing to the bright red blood stain on her baggy shirt.
''Okay, okay you guys that's enough you're freaking her out,'' Jess yelled.
''She's freaking me out,'' Lucas yelled back.
''I bet she's deaf,'' Dustin exclaimed, clapping his hands in front of the girl's timid face. She jumped. ''Not deaf!'' Jess rolled her eyes.
''Just go upstairs and I'll tell you when to come back down,'' Jess ordered, unable to keep her voice as low as possible.
The boys just stood there, they didn't move a muscle until Jess clapped her hands in front of their faces and shoved them lightly to the stairs. ''Move, move, move,'' she yelled.
''We're going, we're going. Jesus, somebody's on their period,'' Dustin muttered under his breath as he followed his friends up the stairs.
Once Jess had made sure they were up the stairs she walked back over to the timid little girl. ''I'm sorry about them, if they scared you,'' she said. Jess stuck out her hand for the little girl to grab and she hesitantly took it, Jess walked her over to the small bathroom Mike had in his basement grabbing some of his clothes from the laundry basket. She handed the little girl the clothes and tried to close the door. The little girl stopped it with her hand, Jess jumped back a little wondering what kind of hell this girl went through to make her not want to close a door. ''You don't want it closed?''
''No,'' the little girl said.
''Oh so you can speak,'' Jess laughed but smiled. ''Okay well...um how about we just keep the door...'' Jess placed the door open three inches. ''Just like this, is that better?''
''Yes,'' the little girl said.
Jess waited for the little girl on the couch, reading one of Mike's comic books to pass the time. When the little girl finally came out of the bathroom she looked a lot warmer and comfier. ''You look warmer,'' Jess smiled. ''What's your name?''
The little girl pulled up the sleeve of her navy blue sweater to reveal a tattoo of the number 011. ''Eleven,'' the little girl exclaimed softly.
''Oh your name's Eleven, that's cool I've always wanted a cooler name. I'm Jess,'' Jess replied.
