Chapter 16

The quintet were interrupted by the sound of voices and loud rustling. ''Do you guys hear that?'' Jess asked. They walked out of the bushes to see Nancy and Jonathan.

''Steve?'' Nancy and Jonathan questioned in unison.

''Nancy?'' Steve questioned.

''Jonathan?'' Dustin questioned.

''Jess?'' Nancy then questioned, pulling her best friend into a warm embrace. Jess returned it. ''What are you doing here?''

''Could ask you the same thing, Nance,'' Jess exclaimed.

''We're looking for Mike and Will,'' Nancy told her friends.

''They're not in there are they?'' Jess questioned, gesturing up to the lab.

''We're not sure, why?'' Jonathan exclaimed.

Suddenly the lights turned back on inside of the lab. ''The power's back on,'' Jonathan said, beginning to press at the button that would open the gate.

''Let me try,'' Dustin said, rushing into the booth with Jonathan.

''Hang on,'' he said.

Dustin pushed Jonathan out the way. ''Let me try Jonathan.'' He started pressing at the button that didn't seem to be working. ''Son of a bitch you know what...'' he then continued rapidly pressed at it.

''He knows he's not going to get it open, right?'' Steve whispered to Jess.

''Yeah but don't tell him that, just let him have his moment,'' Jess whispered back.

Steve just laughed, he wanted nothing more than to just kiss Jess on the lips but Nancy was here and he wasn't sure if she had actually broken up with him or it was just a onetime thing. Suddenly the front gates bust open. ''Hey I got it,'' Dustin chuckled, throwing his hands up in victory.

The group noticed Hopper's car zooming through the gates, he stopped and gestured for everyone to get in. There wasn't that much room in the car so Jess had to practically sit on Steve's lap, her body squished up against his chest and his arms around her waist and hers around his neck. Nancy looked at them, cocking an eyebrow at her best friend and Steve but she nodded reassuringly, knowing that her best friend was a better person for her ex.

The chief drove down to the Byers household, once they arrived each of them stepped out and Hopper made a really embarrassing phone call which ended up with him getting pissed.

''They didn't believe you did they?'' Dustin asked.

''We'll see,'' Hopper replied.

''We'll see?'' Dustin mocked him.

''We can't just sit here while those things are loose!''

''We stay here and we wait for backup,'' Hopper sighed.

''Did you guys know that Bob was the original founder of Hawkins AV?'' Mike asked, picking up the brain puzzles that Bob had left for Will.

Jess's heart broke, she didn't know the man personally but if he made Joyce happy then that was the idea of nice man in her book.

''Really?'' Lucas asked.

''He petitioned the school to start it and everything. Then he had a fundraiser for equipment. Mr. Clarke learned everything from him. Pretty awesome, right?'' Mike explained.

''Yeah,'' Dustin and Lucas replied in unison.

''We can't let him die in vain,'' Mike said.

''What do you want to do, Mike?'' Dustin now asked.
