When Jess arrived back at the radio station with Nancy, Mike, and Lucas, her big green eyes widened at the sight of her not-so-little brother anymore. She didn't care he was pissed at her or that he didn't want to talk to her, Jess rushed at lightning speed towards him, engulfing him into a tight embrace. Jess missed this, she missed her brother; she felt so guilty and helpless for not searching for him but she couldn't abandon Nancy.
Dustin hesitantly embraced his sister back, his arms tightening around her despite the slight bit of discomfort in his chest. Once the two siblings pulled apart, Jess gently placed her hands onto his shoulders, squeezing them reassuringly. That's when she noticed his black eye, bruised cheeks, bleeding nose which had two bits of tissue stuffed in his nostrils, and bleeding lips. It all glistened under the sun, making it look even more unbearable. "Dusty, what happened?" Jess questioned worriedly, now examining his face. Her heart dropped, the thought of someone doing this to her little brother was enough to send her insane.
Just as he was about to respond Mike and Lucas rushed forward, running to engulf their best friend, leaving Jess out.
"Holy shit!" Mike shouted, noticing Dustin's beaten face.
"Yep. Bike crash. Flew headfirst into a light post. Look, I'm sorry about missing the crawl, about everything," Dustin answered, unbothered, looking between his friends and older sister who stood there with an unreadable expression her face. Dustin could tell Jess didn't believe his story for a second.
"It's not your fault. Don't beat yourself up," Mike said.
"Looks like he already did. Is that broken?" Lucas asked, curious as he reached to touch Dustin's bruises and nose.
Jess shook her head and slapped Lucas's hand away from Dustin's face. "Just leave him alone, OK? Someone beat him up and when I found out who, they're dead," Jess pounded her fist furiously as Dustin looked at his sister, his bright blue eyes twinkling with rage.
"I'm fine, Jess. Just stop trying to look out for me, I'm not a kid anymore," Dustin snapped at Jess, rudely pushing past her shoulder.
"I'm only looking out for you because I care, Dusty, you know I love you," Jess confessed, trying her best to appeal to her brother.
He was grieving Eddie and Max, she knew that but a part of Jess knew that Dustin blamed her for Eddie's death. She wasn't there early enough to comfort him, in that moment Dustin was so vulnerable and broken—he still was.
"Well, stop," he snapped again, turning away and joining his friends.
Jess sighed, letting her brother just ignore her concern and move forward.
Steve immediately rushed to Jess's side next, his hands instantly moving to cup her face and examine for injuries. It was sweet how much Steve cared, he was so selfless and adorable, even if they weren't together right now. "Are you okay, Jessie bear? I heard what happened to Nancy's family and..." he cut himself off, he was the only one to notice the thick droplets of crimson splattered on her denim jacket..."holy shit, is this blood?! Shit, Jess! He panicked, tugging on her jacket, and running his hands through his thick brown locks as he helplessly began pacing back and forth.
