Jess's heart thumped loudly in her chest as Nancy zoomed down the streets towards her house. The tires screeching over the road as Nancy took the corners violently like her life depended on it and as a matter of fact it did. Her family was in deep danger. Jess didn't blame Nancy's reckless driving one bit. She could feel the adrenaline pumping through her veins, if anything happened to Holly or Mrs. Wheeler, Nancy would lose herself and Jess understood that feeling completely, the weight of losing a loved one would shatter you. If anything happened to Dustin(wherever the hell he was) or her mum, she would never recover.
Jess leaned impulsively toward El in the passenger seat, checking how far they were from the Wheeler home. Her fingers clenched, her heart raced, and her stomach twisted like a thousand knives digging into her insides. She couldn't bear the thought of little Holly Wheeler targeted by Vecna. She remembered when she was still only two years old and learning to talk and chew her food, she remembered every time Holly would beg to play games with her, Mike, and Nancy. And now it was like waiting for the inevitable, knowing that Holly was in danger. She may be eight or nine now and it bagged a punch knowing that if Nancy didn't act fast she could die.
Nancy's car came to a sudden screeching halt outside of her house, and Jess immediately stepped out. Her heart plummeting from zero to ten in just a matter of minutes, she waited for Nancy to unlock the boot and grab her shogun for safe measure. Jess followed Nancy inside her house, El following closely behind. Jess's breath hitched uncomfortably in her chest as she entered, her hands clasping her mouth in shock. There was no sign of Holly Wheeler but there lay Mrs. Wheeler clad in a white bathing gown, severely bleeding from the deep slashes in her jugular, hips, and stomach. Mascara dripped down her beaten face, her blonde curls matted over her face in a crumpled heap.
The demogorgon had gotten to her and it had taken Holly.
Nancy's jaw dropped open as she lowered her gun and rushed towards her mum in a desperate attempt to help her. Jess kneeled by Mrs. Wheeler's side, reminiscing of the times she stayed over at the Wheeler's home for dinner during freshman year when she befriended Nancy. "You're going to be OK, Mrs. Wheeler, I promise," Jess tried to reassure the older woman selflessly as Nancy slipped her denim jacket off and wrapped it around her mother, trying her best to keep the tears in her eyes from falling.
Mrs. Wheeler let out a hoarse noise, trying to talk despite the severe bloody slash in her larynx. Jess curled her fingers tightly around Mrs. Wheeler's hand, her hand bloody now just as Nancy's was.
"Mum! Don't try to talk, okay? Just stay calm, okay? You're gonna be fine. It's gonna be fine, okay? You're gonna be fine," Nancy breathlessly reassured, tears in her eyes. She couldn't lose her mother. It would be too much.
Jess's heart pounded louder now, her own tears for her best friend's mum pricking in her bright green eyes. Faintly, Mrs. Wheeler breathed out a singular word, her words audible but barely above a tiny whisper. "Holly," she said.
