After a very embarrassing phone call with Mr Clarke and Dustin had written stuff down on a piece of paper, he looked up at Mrs Byers. ''Do you still have that kiddie pool we used to bob apples in?'' he asked, pointing at her with his pencil.
''I think so, yeah,'' Joyce replied, not understanding where this was going.
''Great, we're gonna need salt and lots of it,'' Dustin exclaimed.
''How much is lots?'' Hopper asked.
Dustin looked down at his piece of paper and counted in his head. ''1,500 pounds,'' he said.
''Well where are we gonna get that much salt?'' Jess asked, her eyes widening in shock of how much was needed.
''Hawkins middle school,'' Dustin replied to his sister.
The group arrived at the middle school while Jonathan and Hopper prepared the bags of salt the three boys and Jess started fanning out the small kiddie pool in the school's gym. Dustin got frustrated at the damn thing. ''Son of bitch,'' he cursed. Even with the help of his best friends and sister he still couldn't figure it out and they couldn't seem to either.
''This thing is impossible,'' Jess scoffed, kicking at the flattened piece of material.
Nancy walked by them, she just giggled at her best friend's stupidity. ''You know you have to fill that thing with water right?''
''Yeah that would've been great to know, thanks a lot Nance,'' Jess rolled her eyes.
After filling the kiddie pool up with water and constantly checking at it to see if it was the right temperature Jess helped to pour the salt in, while she did that Dustin tested a compartment of eggs on the water, if they floated it that meant there was enough salt but if it didn't that meant there wasn't enough. After about a few more fillings of salt and egg testing the kiddie pool was finally ready and so was El, she stepped into the small pool, pulled the taped up goggles over her eyes as Joyce clung onto her left her hand and Jess on her right.
''We'll be right here with you every step of the way,'' Jess assured the young girl.
The walkie talkie stood on a small stool beside the boys and Hopper, the static going off like crazy as El focused and went into her state like trance entering the void within her mind. ''Barb? Barbara?'' El called out.
Suddenly the static from the walkie started cutting out. ''What's going on?'' Jess asked.
''Is Barb okay? Is she okay?'' Nancy asked, worried about her friend.
''Gone! Gone! Gone! Gone!'' El repeated over and over, completely struck and traumatised over what she saw. Tears welled up in her eyes. ''Gone!''
''Hey, it's okay, it's okay,'' Jess reassured, squeezing the young girl's hand comforting her.
Nancy gasped, she clapped a hand to her mouth she couldn't take this and just sat there remaining quiet. Her friend was dead. Not missing. Not hiding. Gone. Dead.
