Kie's POV:

After school, I showed up at the Wreck as my dad had hired a few new people and he forgot his work bag at home. I saw he hired two new people. One guy I didn't recognize and the other was JJ. Fuck. Why the hell would my dad hire him?

My dad knows how much I hate JJ and everything that he's done to me. I handed my dad and his bag and he hugged me and thanked me for making the trip over.

"Nice uniform" JJ whispered

"Shut up" I said back and my dad heard me and just gave us a look

"Kiara, you should head home and let JJ get to work"

I walked out of the Wreck and let the door slam behind me. I immediately called Sarah and told her that my dad hired JJ and she was just as pissed as I was.

I went over to her house and she was smiling when I got there. I knew she had a plan.

"So what brilliant idea did you come up with?" I asked my best friend

"You and I are going to be eating at the Wreck a lot more. We'll make JJ's shift hell. Changing our orders, spilling our drinks, being bitches, you know the usual"

"That is why you are my best friend" I said loving her idea

We decided to wait until he was done with all his training. It would be more fun that way. Sarah and I hung out and talked all about our classes and boys.

I went home for dinner and told my mom that my dad hired JJ. She was shocked as I was because she hated JJ too. Ever since I came home from school with a wad of gum in my hair. I told her that it was JJ Maybank who did it and I went to the kook academy the following year.

"Mike, why did you hire JJ? You know how he is with our daughter"

"He's just working at the Wreck. He needed a job and no one else will hire him. Plus, it's cheaper to pay a pogue than it is a kook"

"He does have a point" My mom agreed with him

"Fine, but I never want to work a shift with him"

"You won't have to and he screws up, I'll fire him"

I was just thankful that I never had to work with him.

JJ's POV:

I went to work a few times a week and I worked weekends because I really needed the cash. I only saw Kiara on my first day. She showed up looking all preppy in her kook academy uniform. The people that worked here were pretty decent so that made work tolerable.

The biggest perk was free food. My dad never bought groceries so I happily took home leftovers each night. John B and Pope gave me shit for working at the Wreck, especially because of my history with Kiara.

I decided to pick up a shift tonight because money. I arrived and learned that I was closing with Kie. Her dad was there and she protested and her dad made her stay as it was super busy. I did my job and kept my head down. I didn't want to do anything stupid and lose my job.

All the customers were gone and Kie took off too. She didn't help with any of the cleaning, but Mike didn't seem to mind. It wasn't my place to tell my boss how much this sucked having to stay late and do her half of the work.

I went home and my dad was drunk. He asked where I was and I told him I was at work. I didn't tell him where I worked. I didn't want him showing up or causing any trouble.

I was hoping he'd let me just go to my room but he didn't. It was just a small shove into a wall and I walked away but he still didn't have to touch me. I couldn't wait to just leave the Outer Banks after graduation and never return.

The next day was a Wednesday and I decided to skip school today. I headed to the beach to surf and smoke some weed. What are the fucking odds that Kie is out surfing right now. She saw me and I stuck my middle finger up at her and she did the same thing back to me. I swear that I run into her everywhere. It's ridiculous.

She exited the water holding her board and said, "Skipping school, careful that can get you after school detention which means you'll miss work and that means you'll be fired"

"I've got it taken care of but you're skipping too. Maybe I should mommy and daddy" I threatened back

"Go ahead, they know I'm home today. I had really bad cramps this morning"

"Didn't need to know that" I said wishing I didn't know that she had her period

"You know sharks can smell blood. Not very smart to be in the ocean. Luckily, I don't have to worry about that" I said heading into the water

"Oh, I can make you bleed" She said dropping her board and running into the ocean after me

She caught up to me and jumped onto my back, knocking us both over as we wrestled in water. It wasn't a I'm going to drown you type thing. It was more just a competitive thing. The two eventually stopped when a stranger called out and asked, "You two okay?"

"Yeah, we're good" We both said

"That's Luke's son.. Honey, was he hurting you?" A lady asked Kie all concerned

"What? No, we were just messing around. It's all good" She defended me

I grabbed my board and walked away from the beach back to the cut. I went to the chateau and smoked some weed to calm down. Just because I'm Luke's big people hate me. I can't believe that lady today actually thought that I was hurting Kiara.

Yes, we both didn't like each other. We're enemies, always fighting and hating on each other. But I would never do anything to actually hurt her or kill her. I slammed a few beers and realized that I was supposed to be at work. Well, there goes my job at the Wreck. I didn't even bother to call Mike. I just showed up the next morning and was prepared to be fired.

"Morning, JJ!" Mike said cheerfully

"Good morning, sir"

"I hope you're feeling better. Kiara told me you tried calling the store"

"Uh yeah, had a bad case of food positioning. Whatever I ate at lunch didn't agree with me" I tried to lie my way out of this

"Glad you're back, just let me know if you start feeling sick again. We can't have you sick working around food"

I gave him a nod and went back to clock in. Tyler, a pogue who worked here informed me that Kie came in last night and covered my shift for me. I wonder why she did that. She hated me, now she did something nice. I don't think she's ever done something nice for me before. Hmmm.
