[Republic City Hospital]
Mako could hear you freaking out from the hallway. Even after the third nurse rushed in to keep you pinned down, he could tell by your breathing that nothing they did was working,
"Hey, hey," Mako said as calmly as possible as he pushed past the nurses and took your face in his hands,
"Mako?"
"Yeah. You feeling better?" he asked sweetly,
"No. Why am I here!?" you asked panicked,
"Ladies, c-can you give us a minute? I got her," Mako reassured them until they nodded and left the room, "Jay you too," he ordered,
"Fine. Not like I had nothing better to do with my day," Jay sighed in annoyance before he shut the door on his way out,
"What..W-What do you remember?" he asked you hesitantly,
"Y-You telling me to go back to bed," you blurted quickly,
"What about after that?" Mako questioned when he sat down next to you and fixed your hair,
"I guess...us arguing over Shah. Then...rushing through traffic,"
"Do you remember those two men snatching you out the back of my squad car?" Mako asked,
"I-I didn't...I didn't dream that?"
"No," Mako said saddened before his jaw clenched tight, "What about...seeing your brother?
"Uhh. Yeah. H-He was umm...s-soaking wet. Matter of fact, where is he?"
"I don't know. Before he nearly killed you he jumped off your balcony—
"Shah's dead!?—
"No!—
"T-Then w-what are you talking about almost killed me!? And j-jumped from my balcony!? S-Shah wouldn't do that,"
"Look at me," Mako ordered softly when you started to freak out again, "I know you're in shock but I need you to listen and try to remember okay?" he pleaded, holding your cheek until your breathing calmed, "Shah was soaking wet right? What all did he say to you?"
"I....
Oh, just had a little dip in Republic Beach.
"He said he had been at the beach," you recalled faintly, the blurred memories quickly whisking through your mind,
"What else?" Mako asked,
Is he why you wouldn't bail me out!?
S-Shah–L-Let me go!
"He...H-He choked me because he found out about us, f-from one of my neighbors," you gulped slowly, the pain in your throat parching your tongue completely dry, "H-He thought you were the reason I didn't pay his bail,"
"Was I?" Mako questioned,
"No. I was sick of him being a goddamn idiot and expecting me to clean up his mess when he got caught," you snapped with your fist clenched,
"Okay," Mako nodded, "Anything else?"
"He said...something I didn't understand,"
Let go your earthly tether. Enter the void. Empty, and become wind.
W-What the hell does that mean!?
"Didn't understand? What do you mean?" Mako questioned when he lost your gaze,
"When I told him to let me go. He said, let go your earthly tether. Enter the void, empty, and become wind. I've...I-I've never heard him talk like that before,"
"Earthly tether," Mako whispered, "I-I just remembered I have to be somewhere–
"Wait. Hold on," you pleaded as you snatched Mako's wrist, "You're not leaving me here. Take me with you,"
"The nurses haven't cleared you just y–
"Take me with you,"
[Viper's Restaurant]
"I just knew that little piss-ant cop Mako was up to something," Viper hissed as he paced back and forth,
"Maybe she's going into witness protection," Shin chimed in between two double shots of rum,
"No. It's gotta be more than that. He came to find me, personally. A-And somehow she was conveniently sitting in the back of his squad car? Then he goes and shoots one of my men!?" Viper growled, "And not to mention, that worthless piece of shit Shah is out there with every damn cop on the lookout. Capturing him ourselves is gonna get dicey,"
"That's what we have Mudo for," Shin reminded him, "And if you ask me. Sounds like your little damsel might have a thing for Mako there,"
"Hmph. For both of their sake, I hope you're wrong,"
[Republic City Hospital]
"Don't start this with me. You need rest," Mako sighed in frustration the longer you argued with him about taking you along,
"I-I'll do that later, b-but you can't leave me here," you begged once more, your fingers still gripped tight around Mako's wrist,
"Look, you're on the twelfth floor surrounded by doctors and nurses. You'll be fine until I get b–
"Oh yeah? And what exactly happened last time you let me out of your sight?" you snapped at him, staring him down until he finally caved,
"Ugh. Fine," Mako sighed, knowing damn well just how right you were, "Just hang on a second," he nodded before he peaked into the hallway, "Jay," he called softly,
"Oh, are we back to our senses?" Jay teased as he slipped into the room,
"Complete opposite," Mako breathed while he held up his keys, "I need you to bring my car around,"
"What for?" Jay questioned suspiciously, watching Mako strip from his jacket and throw it around your shoulders,
"In simple terms, we're discharging her early," he informed Jay quickly after scooping you into his arms and setting you in the nearby wheelchair,
"You're kidnapping a patient? D-Did you even find out what happened to her?"
"Umm. Let's see," Mako breathed, snatching the file the nurse had left on the table, "Six stitches from the glass they removed from her ankle. Bruising around her esophagus, and would you look at that? A refilled prescription for your anxiety medication," he smirked slyly,
"I am not taking those," you scoffed,
"We'll discuss it later. For now, keep your head down and don't look anybody in the eye," Mako ordered before he wheeled you out of the room and quickly made his way to the elevator,
"This is madness y'know?" Jay exclaimed as quietly as possible,
"Hmph. Which part?" Mako grinned when the doors flung open,
"Every part. Even knowing her for one,"
"Don't talk about her like she's not even here," Mako snapped,
"Fine. I hope you know the amount of trouble you're putting us in," Jay huffed at you,
"It's not like I'm holding a gun to his head," you hissed at him, "He could've said no,"
"Could I have?" Mako chuckled,
"It's not like you haven't pointed one at him before," Jay reminded you in annoyance,
"Maybe I should point one at you next–
"Okay," Mako chimed in with a smile after clamping his around your mouth, "You can't verbally threaten any officers in my presence, is that clear?" he commanded sweetly, holding your mouth until you eventually shook your head yes, "Good," Mako smirked after pulling his hand away, "If you feel the urge, just threaten me. I know they're empty anyway," he teased,
"Hmph. I highly doubt that," Jay mumbled under his breath,
"And you, can't antagonize her," Mako ordered, "Whether you get along or not is irrelevant. We need her for this case. So save your comments unless they're helpful,
"Hmph. Fine," Jay sighed once they finally reached the parking garage, "Can you at least tell me where we're going?"
"The Ferry. We're meeting Councilman Tenzin. For what, I don't know,"
"Why do I have a feeling this is just going to further complicate things?" Jay questioned after Mako carefully set you in the backseat and buckled you in,
"Considering Kuvira goes where he goes, it already is complicated,"
"He's her handler?" Jay asked once Mako plopped down in the driver's seat and adjusted his mirrors,
"He's certainly the best person for it–
"Excuse me?" you interrupted frustratedly, "When exactly are you going to tell me what happened to my brother? You said he jumped from my balcony. Last time I checked I live eleven stories off the ground," you snapped,
"Hmph. Tell her," Jay ordered Mako,
"Fine. It appears...t-that your brother...c-can fly," Mako replied as he cleared his throat,
"Are you...fucking with me?" you scowled from the rearview mirror, "Shah can't fucking fly. He can't even fucking bend. H-How could he have learned how to fly in less than a day?"
"That's what we're going to find out,"
[Republic City Prison] - South Entrance
"Well, you're in luck," A sharply dressed lawyer smiled lightly when he joined Mudo outside in the warm shade, "The system is backed up, so I can't get you in front of a judge for another month. But as long as you wear this ankle monitor you'll remain on probation until your court date,"
"Wow," Mudo grinned slyly when he tossed him the key to unlock his cuffs, "You really are Viper's lawyer,"
"Hmph. Speaking of. He's umm...waiting for you," Viper's lawyer sighed, eyeing the black Cadillac sitting at the end of the parking lot,
"Well, let's not keep him waiting any longer, shall we?"
[The Ferry]
"You made it," Tenzin nodded when Mako finally arrived and slipped out of his car,
"Is this the part where you tell me what I made it to?" Mako asked sternly as he glared at Kuvira,
"Of course. But first, our ferry awaits,"
