[Downtown, Republic City] - 16th Precinct
"You ever take my keys like that again I will not hesitate to handcuff you to a stop sign," Mako hissed at Jay after slamming the car door shut,
"Threaten me all you want. It was more than necessary!" Jay snapped back at him, following Mako inside, "Who knows, if I hadn't, you might've gotten us both killed by having such blind rage over her,"
"I-I do not have blind rage," Mako argued, "I-I happen to love her, and I'd rather she not get any more injured than she already h–where...is everyone?" he questioned when they stepped into the lobby to find one or two assistants shuffling through a mountain of paperwork, yet barely any officers in sight,
"Damn it. What day is it?" Jay asked,
"The 28th,"
"Fuck. The retiree dinner is tonight at the Plaza. Lin is giving a speech. Damn near every officer in town will be there," Jay sighed,
"Well, so much for backup," Mako breathed after swiping a pair of car keys off the front desk,
"Please. I know for a fact you're enjoying this. You didn't want backup anyway," Jay scoffed when they reached the handful of unmarked squad cars tucked in the back of the parking lot,
"Hmph. Never wanted it. Never needed it," Mako smirked, "Now, let's get a move on,"
[Lake Laogai] - Crystal Catacombs
"That was quick. You sure you had enough time to wash all the blood off of you?" Shah teased when Kuvira came out of the bathroom, the steam from the shower spilling out from the cracked door,
"Ugh. I had plenty of time," Kuvira scoffed, brushing through her wet hair in the vanity mirror, "Now I'd appreciate it if you went back to shutting up. I need to think,"
"By all means," Shah grinned while he laid shirtless on the bed, "Think out loud,"
"Absolutely not," Kuvira replied unamused, "That last thing I need is input from some rambling idiot,"
"Hmm. You never know, maybe this rambling idiot can help. What with you being my girlfriend and all," Shah smirked,
"Don't call me that! We are nothing," Kuvira snapped, "I only went along with your stupid lie so Rohai wouldn't kill you,"
"Aww. So you do love me," Shah cooed before he crossed the room and gripped Kuvira's chin, "You wanna hold hands on the way to dinner? Really sell it?"
"Ugh! You touch me again and I will give that nurse a reason to come back in here," Kuvira threatened, snatching her face from his fingers and marching away from him,
"Hmph. I'm not afraid of you," Shah chuckled, watching Kuvira pace back and forth in frustration,
"Yeah!? You should be,"
"And why's that? Huh? Because you can bury me in the very ground we're standing on?" he questioned curiously, "Take a look around cupcake. Every agent in these tunnels can do the same. So you're going to have to do a hell of a lot more to scare me away," he huffed at her with his fists clenched, "Besides, all that anger of yours is misplaced anyway. I'm not the one you're really mad at,"
"Oh, I'm 100% certain you are!"
"Then do it then! Do what Viper didn't have the guts to do and end me right here. Right now," Shah taunted her, the seriousness in his eyes stunning Kuvira completely silent.
They glared at one another for what felt like centuries, both of their tempers at the tip of boiling.
"Hmph. Just like I thought," Shah breathed frustratedly when Kuvira did absolutely nothing to call his bluff, "So, who are you really mad at?"
"Nobody–
"Kuvira–
"I said nobody okay!? And even if it was somebody, it wouldn't be any of your goddamn business,"
"Ugh. Earthbenders," Shah sighed in exhaustion before plopping back on the bed just to stare up at the ceiling,
"What's that supposed to mean?" Kuvira hissed at him,
"You know what it means," Shah answered without meeting her gaze,
"E-Excuse me?"
"You earthbending chicks are all the same. You don't want to be all alone in the world yet,
you shut everybody out.
"Maybe it's because I don't want anybody in. I'm fine being on my own,"
"So you say," Shah sighed once more, standing to his feet when the crystal doors opened and two Dai Li agents stood at the entrance to escort them to dinner, "Do me a favor though. Let me know when you're getting tired of this whole tough girl act. Who knows, you might actually benefit from having an ally. Dare I say, a friend,"
[Kwong's Restaurant] - parking lot
"No! Viper–l-let me go! I-I don't work for y–
"I'd stop squirming if I were you," Viper sneered, holding the barrel of his gun against your ribs as he gripped your arm tight,
"I-I...I knew it wasn't in the car," you gulped,
"Sorry kitten, you've never been one to come quietly,"
"Y-You're insane. You can't possibly think I-I'm going to still work for you," you panted in terror, "I told you I was walking home after this,"
"And you may walk," Viper grinned slyly, eventually setting your arm free, "As long as it's through that intersection, in the next two minutes,"
"What? You want me to stand in the middle of the street?"
"Exactly, but first. Drink this," Viper ordered, pulling his flask from his coat,
"What? No!"
"Shall we revisit the gun?" he threatened, pointing the barrel at your heart,
"Ugh. Fine!" you seethed, snatching the flask from his hand and downing what was left, in less than ten seconds, "Ugh! You know I hate scotch," you coughed,
"Sorry darling. But it wasn't exactly for you to like. I need the smell on your breath to be strong,"
"Ugh. Strong for what?" you huffed after spitting in the dirt,
"Strong for when that lawyer hits you and checks to make sure you're okay," Viper nodded,
"What!?" you gasped, "M-My job is to get flattened by a car!?"
"Not flattened. Just bumped, okay? He'll hit the brakes, just–not fast enough. At most, you'll walk away with some bruises,"
"Viper!"
"Hey! What's rule one of the Triple Threats?" Viper roared, clasping his hand around your throat and crushing your windpipe ever so slowly,
"Mmph. D-Don't question the plan," you croaked, your eyes begging for him to let go,
"Hmph. Good girl,"
[The Docks]
"I hate it down here," Mako scoffed after cutting off his headlights, "It's moldy, wet, and disgusting,"
"I wouldn't say that," Jay sighed with a slight smirk, "If it wasn't for the organized crime and violent gang affiliation, I'd live down here,"
"Please you can't even stomach the scent of your neighbor's cooking and you're telling me you can live in a place where it reeks of rotten fish all day?"
"For your information, I happen to believe that all my neighbor cooks is rotten fish. Because certainly, fresh fish wouldn't smell like that," Jay scoffed as he rolled his eyes, "A-And it's not just his cooking, I swear he's leaving his dirty gym socks next to the vents. So the Docks would definitely be a step up,"
"Yeah, and I'm sure once the Triple Threats find out there's a cop living in their territory, they'll be the first to welcome you to the neighborhood with open fists,"
"Do you think they'll bring cookies also? Or just the senseless beating?" Jay grinned,
"Funny," Mako chuckled, slowing the car to a rolling stop,
"Is this Shin's house?" Jay asked curiously, peering through the window to read the addresses, "No, but I recognize this street. We have to be close, so I'm gonna park here," Mako breathed before going silent, his jaw clenched tight with rage,
"We're going to find her," Jay reassured him,
"I know," Mako answered softly, "It's just–I-I'm not sure how much damage it's going to take for me to do so,"
[Lake Laogai] - Crystal Catacombs
"Stay close to me," Shah ordered Kuvira beneath his breath while the two Dai Li agents walked ahead,
"Why? We're going to the same place," Kuvira hissed quietly,
"Because if I find an opening to bust out of here. I wasn't exactly planning on leaving you behind,"
"If anyone can bust out of here, it's me. And I sure as hell don't need you slowing me down,"
"That so? Tell me, who between the two of us has successfully escaped from prison? And who spent the last six years in maximum security?"
"Watch it–
"I am watching," Shah huffed, linking his arm through hers and tugging her close, "And need I remind you, we're also being watched,"
"Ugh. What did I say about touching me!?"
"Is there a problem?" one of the Dai Li agents asked after stopping in their tracks,
"No. She's uhh, still mad at me," Shah smirked slyly, wrapping his arm around Kuvira's waist despite how pissed she looked, "I'm not quite exactly out of the doghouse yet. You know women, they can really hold a grudge,"
"I will kill you," Kuvira mouthed silently,
"Hmm. Right," the agent nodded skeptically before leading the way again,
"What did I say about your temper?" Shah snapped softly,
"Ugh. I will take your opinion into consideration when you learn to keep your hands to yourself," Kuvira scolded him, ripping her body from his grip,
"Hmph. Whatever you say dear," Shah smirked,
[Kwong's Restaurant] - parking lot
"Start walking and make the hit believable," Viper ordered, releasing your throat from his grasp,
"Tell me the plan first," you seethed,
"No. You'll overthink it,"
"Viper!–
"Fine! I need that lawyer to think he hit you bad enough to rush you to the hospital in his car. While you're in there, I need you to lift some documents from his briefcase,"
"What kind of documents?" you questioned sharply,
"That's not important–
"But you need them bad enough to let me get hit by a car!?"
"If you don't start walking missy, that car will be the least of your worries!"
"Stop threatening me and tell me what's on those documents!"
"You wanna know!?" Viper barked with his fists clenched, pacing the parking lot to calm his rage, "They're warrants. And that shitfaced lawyer is about to deliver those to a judge for his signature to approve a raid on my business. Everything I worked for,"
"So...y-you want me to steal them so that doesn't happen,"
"Hmph. I told you I needed your talents. Missing you was just a bonus," he smirked slyly, "So let's go. We're running short on time,"
