"Linguist Paul Grice was the one who proposed the cooperative principles which were divided into four maxims of conversation: quantity, quality, manner and relation," Professor Miguel lectured with a stern voice.

"The first one is Maxim of quantity. Maxim of quantity means that. . . a person has to be informative. You have to give the specific and needed information and avoid uttering unnecessary words in a conversation. The second one is the Maxim of quality which means a person must be truthful to his. . . "

She just nodded and said thank you.

"Cr tayo mamaya, ha?" she secretly whispered again.

Natawa ako nang bahagya at tumango. "Oo.

I replied.

"The second Linguist is Geoffrey Neil Leech who has a high contribution in Language Power as he proposed his Maxims of the Politeness Principle. There are six Politeness Principle he listed namely: tact, generosity, approbation, modesty, agreement and sympathy maxims." Prof. Miguel cleared his throat before uttering the next sentence and plastered a smile on his lips. "This is exciting."

"Okay, Let's start first at the Tact Maxim. Tact Maxim's motive is to test your strategy or techniques on how to say something to someone without uttering offensive words."

I chuckled while my eyes still on Prof. "Tiis ka lang d'yan, Fe.

Since when she was nominated as the representative of CoE second year, puro complain na lang talaga ang naririnig namin sa kanya dahil nabibigatan siya sa heels na ginagamit niya.

"For instance the situation is this: You asked your classmate to answer the phone by saying 'Would you mind passing me the cup, please?' instead of saying 'Hey, pass me the cup'. As much as possible, iwasan mo yung salitang pwedeng maka-apekto sa taong kinakausap mo lalo na kung hindi naman kayo close. Do you understand?"

Agad kaming sumagot ng 'yes'. I saw in my peripheral vision Fe heaved a sigh like she's already stressing about the topic.

"Get one whole sheet of yellow pad, class," anunsyo ni Sir sa amin.

My classmates let out a loud groan.

Koven demanded.
