The moment Chan texted Hyunjin a code red, he just wrapped up a business deal with a man who wanted to buy a painting. It took them nearly two hours before they finally agreed on a price. They shook hands and the man excused himself from the room. Tomorrow the two of them would close the deal in Hyunjin's office back at the Bella-Nova.
The buyer needed time to make arrangements with his bank to pull out a large amount of cash. Hyunjin promised the man he'd pull the painting from the gallery and keep it safe for him. Out of habit, Hyunjin pulled out his phone and glanced at his text messages.
When he read the text, he shoved himself up and hurried outside. He met the man at a coffee shop across the street from the Bella-Nova. It took him a while to cut across all the traffic on the highway. He marched into the gallery with his head held high and wasted no time getting back to his office.
When he pulled open his office door, he was greeted with Seungmin and I.N. I.N glanced over at the sound of the door opening. "Did you get the text message too?"
"Yeah," he shut the door behind him. "Any idea what it's about?"
"I don't know, but it must be important. The last time we got a code red was over a year ago. I fucking hate code reds."
A code red was exactly what it sounded like. It could be a text message or a phone call from one of the members, but the memo was the exact same. Stop whatever you're doing at the moment and join the rest of us. It usually sent everyone into a panicked frenzy.
Seungmin yanked the book to open the hidden entrance. The bookcase popped open and the three walked into the hidden entryway. Hyunjin shut the door behind him and they made their way into the conference room.
Upon arriving, the rest of the members were already gathered in different seats. Chan was at the head of the table as per usual. Han drummed his fingers along the surface nervously while Felix fiddled with his Nintendo Switch beside him.
"Where's the princess?" Seungmin asked. "I'm shocked she wasn't invited."
Chan shot him an unamused look. Felix glanced up from his Nintendo Switch. "Kiera is sleeping because she's been throwing up all night. Channie says she has a fever."
Seungmin was thrown off guard at the response. He raised an eyebrow and opened his mouth to question it, but Felix beat him to it. "She had lo-mein noodles from that one Chinese place."
"Gross."
Across the way, Han shivered at the memory of the container of noodles he shared with Seungmin months before. The two of them developed severe stomach cramps for hours. What wasn't thrown up, it came out the other end. They both spent two days feeling miserable.
"Now that you're all here," Chan started, "I think we can be informed of the situation now." He glanced over at Han and Lee Know and gestured for them to start.
"I think there's someone watching us," Han said. He sat up straighter in his chair and picked his head up. "Earlier, a car followed me out of the Bella-Nova parking lot. When I got to where I needed to go, I glanced over at their car. I realized they followed my Uber and when they saw me staring at their car, they sped off."
"How do we know this isn't just some weirdo?" Seungmin asked.
"Because I've been feeling like I've been watched for a few days now. I kept brushing it off and brushing it off, but it escalated into that this morning. I've been on edge ever since then."
Felix turned off his Switch and placed it on the table in front of him. "Why would someone be watching us? Wouldn't we notice that?"
"Why didn't you say something sooner?" Changbin's voice raised.
"I didn't think it was a big deal! You all know how bad my anxiety can be! I know I'm on medication for it, but I just thought that maybe I was anxious and imagining things."
Changbin crossed his arms over his chest, "so what do we do now? We can't lock ourselves away in a building. We have things to do and jobs that need to be done. In fact, I'm supposed to go back to the warehouse and work out."
"Have the rest of you felt like you're being watched?" Chan glanced around the room at everyone else. Multiple heads shook confirming they hadn't experienced anything out of the ordinary.
"Someone drove up to the warehouse yesterday," I.N spoke up. "I was outside and they pulled up to the front of the building. When I heard the car, I glanced over at it thinking it was one of you. There was a woman in it tapping on her phone. She sat there for a good twenty seconds before she reversed the car and drove off. I figured she was lost and trying to reroute her way back to wherever she needed to go."
"Anyone else?"
A hushed silence fell over the room. Chan glanced around at his members and shook his head. "There doesn't seem to be much we can do. These could both just be coincidences."
"But I-" Han started.
"No buts. We can't prove these people had malicious intentions. From now on when you're outside, I want all of you to be with a buddy. Besides that, you better be wearing your ear-pieces. Be aware of your surroundings and be diligent. I don't want anyone to take this lightly. Do you hear me?"
Mumbled agreements filled the room. Chan sat back in his chair and let his eyes close. He sucked in a deep breath and tipped his head back towards the ceiling.
This was the last thing he wanted to add to his list of ever-growing problems.
