When nobody could find Lee Know, Chan sent Han to the diner to find him. Hyunjin tagged along with Han because he could. The two were discussing plans to try to get Felix back. The more the pair talked along the walk, the more hopeless it was beginning to feel.
"They have guards and guard dogs. There are snipers and there are multiple levels of security we'd have to go through. Besides," Hyunjin's shoulders slumped, "we have no idea where Felix is. We don't even know if he's really in the white house."
Han nodded and stayed quiet. Felix had only been gone for a single day. This morning was day two, but it felt like he had been missing a lifetime. Han knew he cared about Felix, but he didn't realize how much he cared until he was gone. Nobody realized it until now.
Hyunjin grabbed the metal handle of the glass door and swung it open for Han to walk inside. Han walked ahead and glanced around the diner. It was still early, but he was shocked to see that there weren't customers inside. Even the old music was turned off.
"Looking for Lee Know?" The cheery voice of the waitress Lee Know worked with appeared.
Han glanced over to see her sitting in a booth with her cell phone. He nodded his head and headed toward her. "What's up with today? You guys usually have customers at this time."
"We just opened about five minutes ago. There was an electrical issue, so our power was off. With no power, there's nothing running in the kitchen. Without the kitchen, keeping a diner open is pointless. Lee Know is back in the kitchen."
Hyunjin followed Han as he went back to the kitchen. His eyes met the waitress' on the way back and she smiled at him. He returned it before he entered the kitchen with Han. When Han threw the doors open, he was expecting Lee Know. He walked further into the kitchen and so did Hyunjin.
Hyunjin had never been to this diner before. Sure, he heard Lee Know and Han talk about it, but he had never been here. He glanced around at all the pots and pans hanging from the ceilings. In one corner, there was a pair of high-grade deep fryers. Greased stove tops and a few different ovens. In another section, there was a stack of cups with a bunch of red plastic baskets next to it.
The kitchen was large enough for a few people to walk and work around seamlessly. The faint scent of peanut-oil lingered in the air. The rust-colored ceramic floor was free from dirt and it seemed to have a sheer gleam from a recent mopping.
Hyunjin's eyes landed on the back door of the kitchen. "What's that?" He gestured over to the door.
"That? That's the walk-in freezer. They keep all their frozen food in there. Lee Know says that's the coldest freezer he's ever been in. Speaking of him, he's not here. He must be in the bathroom."
A small click caused Hyunjin and Han to glance at each other. Han was the first to turn back to the swinging entrance doors. He paused when he made eye contact with someone holding a gun. With a pounding heart, his hands went above his head. When Hyunjin turned, his eyes widened. He opened his mouth to speak, but no words came out.
The guy standing with the gun must have been about six feet tall. The barrel of the gun was trained on Han's forehead. The barrel was long and thin. It was a gun that Han had never seen before. The sound of a door swinging open came from behind them and another click caused a heavy sense of dread to form.
"What do you want?" Han was the first to speak.
"You're coming with us."
"I think the fuck not!" Hyunjin spat. "Who the hell are you anyway?" He jerked his head around to see another guy behind him with a gun trained on his forehead. His jaw clenched in anger.
"I don't think that matters right now. Get on the fucking ground. On your knees, right fucking now." The man's voice was gruff as he gestured to the floor with his gun.
"Cunts," Hyunjin mumbled beneath his breath.
"On the ground!" The other guy barked.
"Could you stop being so mean to them?" A feminine voice asked.
The waitress appeared behind the armed man. She was wearing the poodle skirt uniform for the diner. Her eyes met Han's and a look of pity filled them.
"What's going on?" He asked.
"These two guys came in asking some things about Lee Know. Apparently, they work for the government and have some questions for him. He was supposed to be here, but he never showed up."
"Since when do government officials threaten and intimidate civilians with guns?" Hyunjin squawked.
"I'm sorry, but I overheard everything, Han."
"What?"
"The day that you came to visit Lee Know in the kitchen a while ago. The day the man got into a deep frying accident. I saw and overheard everything. When these guys came in asking about Kiera Campbell and her affiliation to Lee Know, I couldn't help it."
"Hey, have you ever heard of snitches get stitches?" Hyunjin's voice raised.
"They offered me a thousand dollars," she shrugged. "I wasn't going to, but that's a thousand dollars I can use to help catch up on bills. Just get on the ground, so they can do what they need to do."
Han sighed, but did as he was told. He reached around and pulled on Hyunjin's pant leg to get him to do the same thing. A whine came from the back of Hyunjin's throat.
"You fucking bitch!" Hyunjin spat. "You snitched for a fucking thousand dollars? Aren't you the same waitress who had a crush on Lee Know? What happened to loyalty?"
"I know I shouldn't have and I'm sorry, but I have a baby at home."
Hyunjin huffed once more. He shot a glare at the guy standing in front of him with a gun. "Do you know who I am?"
"Everyone knows who you are, Hwang Hyunjin."
"Just wait until my lawyers find out about this."
"It's a good thing they won't then."
Taking that as a signal to go, the gun pointed at Han fired. The waitress let out an ear-piercing scream. The gun pointed at Hyunjin was quick to follow suit.
It didn't take long before both men slumped to the floor without moving.
