"The first time I saw you, I knew you were the one for me. You are my dream come true. You are my prince charming."
Ruhanika
My life had taken an unexpected turn, plunging me into a whirlwind of emotions and challenges I never imagined I would face. Just yesterday, I was happily engrossed in my documentary project, making assumptions about the lavish lifestyle of a royal family. Now, I found myself in the very same palace, but 800 years in the past, working in the kitchen and assisting with the preparations for the royal feast scheduled for tonight in honor of the prince's arrival.
As I stood amidst the clattering pots and bustling attendants, anxiety washed over me. I didn’t know the first thing about cooking. My upbringing in a hostel after my parents passed away had left me ill-equipped for the culinary demands of the royal kitchen. My mother, protective and wary of my disastrous attempts at cooking, had never allowed me near the kitchen. The extent of my culinary skills boiled down to frying rice and making instant Maggi—skills taught to me by my friend Kiran, hardly sufficient for the grand feast we were preparing.
Wearing a traditional Indian dress gifted by Maya felt surreal; I was grateful for her kindness but longed for the comfort of my cozy pajamas. Here, in this alien yet mesmerizing world, I felt the weight of every fabric fold as I moved. I couldn’t afford to look foolish or, worse, raise suspicions that I was a spy from another kingdom.
Despite the gravity of my situation, I couldn’t help but see the silver lining. This was an unparalleled opportunity to gather firsthand information about the history of Magadh and its royal lineage. My plan was taking shape, albeit slowly. I needed to earn the trust of those around me; they viewed me as an outsider, a remnant of another kingdom. If I could blend in, I could discreetly collect details about the royal family and perhaps, if the opportunity arose, sneak into the prince’s chamber.
