CHAPTER ONE.
ONE YEAR AGO FROM THE PRESENT DAY.
Klaus watched her walk across the lawn to him with that pinched expression she had been wearing since they had arrived at the farm house two days ago. He had heard her angry voice raised as she argued with Elijah last night after he had spent the day with his now seven year old daughter. Still awed that the two year old toddler had grown into such a beautiful sweet little girl who held his hand and listened intently, enraptured by his stories giving him shy smiles, hugs and kisses willingly. He watched the remarkable strong woman stride towards him. The woman who had protected his daughter, cared, loved and protected Hope. Had managed to save his siblings finding the cure for the enhanced wolf venom bite. Saving Freya and finding the cure for her poisoned body and Rebekah, Hayley finding the cure for her hex. Hayley had accomplished all that and looked after their daughter for five years alone. Allowing him to be freed from his torturous imprisonment from Marcel. His daughter loved him and he knew that was Hayley's doing, she sat down with a sigh her face tight he could see the anger and frustration in her eyes.
"What is it?" He asked her quietly sitting out here at the picnic table alone drinking, after he had read a bedtime story to Hope.
"I need to talk to you about Hope and my relationship with Elijah and now that Marcel has forgiven us and we can move back to New Orleans. I am trying to set some ground rules within the compound to protect Hope. I think Hope is too young to understand my relationship with Elijah and I don't want her to know about it. I want him to get an apartment in the city and we ...." She looked away from him, "Met there when ......you know," She tried awkwardly looking back at him.
"You want to keep your sexual relationship with Elijah separate from the family home so Hope remains unaware until she is older." He announced helping her out seeing the relief on her face that he understood.
"Yes and Elijah thinks she should be told, but he is her uncle not her father so I wanted your opinion."
"I think you are right Hayley, I wouldn't bring women home to the compound even if I had a long term lover. An apartment in the french quarter is a better idea, no need for Hope to be exposed to her parents' partners until she is older," Klaus agreed. Then he smirked, "Even if one of the parents' partners is her uncle."
"Oh god it sounds so wrong when it is said out loud by someone else," She raked her hands through her hair in agitation taking his glass and swallowing his bourbon. "It would be so much easier if you and I were together," She smirked at him, "But that was never going to happen." She announced. A small part of her wanted him to deny her words but he stayed silent.
"I will talk to Elijah and tell him the apartment is a good idea that we mutually decided on this decision for Hope's benefit. He will not argue," Klaus announced with certainty.
