This afternoon, Laila and I went to the beach to surf after school, but the others couldn't come because they had some schoolwork to do. I had a lot of fun with Laila; I wish Flor could be here; we would make a nice group. We surfed a few waves and came out because we were a little cold; we were in the water for about two hours. When we came out and changed, we went to the beach bar to have some smoothies and eat something. I've wanted to ask her how things are going with Zac and if her parents have changed their mindset, but I hadn't had the chance to ask her until now that we're both alone.
- Laila, it's not nosy of me to ask this, but... how are things with Zac? Well, with your parents.
- Oh no, don't worry. Zac and I are very good friends... and with my parents... - she paused - I don't even talk to them. Their way of thinking made me distance myself from them.
- Yeah... I know. Have you ever tried talking to them about the issue again?
- What for? I already know the answer: "He's not on our same economic level" "What do you want to live off? A surfer with no future?" - she says imitating her parents' voice.
- Everything will be fine, and you two will be able to be together, trust me. - I say and put a hand on her shoulder.
- What if he gets tired of waiting for me? He'll probably go with someone else, that's why it's better to just be my best friend and nothing more.
- Oh, Laila, Zac loves you and will wait for you as long as it takes. He probably thinks the same as you and wishes with all his heart that it doesn't happen.
As I said that, she looked at me for a few seconds, and I knew she was about to cry, until she did, and I hugged her.
- Don't cry, because I'll cry too, and I wouldn't be able to comfort you. - I said, and she laughed a little, albeit sadly.
After that sad moment for Laila, we said goodbye since she had to go somewhere. I went home and changed into comfortable clothes because Luke is coming to pick me up on his skateboard to teach me. I don't even want to think that this could end very badly. He arrived earlier than I expected... that speaks well of him. As I was about to open the door, I made eye contact with my mother, and she smiled at me excitedly because she said going out to skateboard was like a date.
- Good luck. - my mother says quietly.
- Thanks, Mom.
As I opened the door, I saw him leaning against the wall with the skateboard in his hand and the helmet with other things for protection.
I took a few seconds to greet him because I stared at him like an idiot.
- And where's my hug? - he asks when he sees that I didn't greet him.
- Sorry. - I say and hug him. - I was just imagining my certain death because of skateboarding classes.
- Are you telling me I'm not going to be a good skateboarding teacher?
I'm offended. - he says, pretending to cry.
- No! I'm not saying that. - I say and start laughing.
- Well, I'm going to forget your cruel comment. - then he calls Kimba to join us.
We went to a street with no cars or houses, just palm trees and a view of a volcano surrounded by vegetation. The skateboards are quite large; according to Luke, they are the easiest ones to learn on.
- Do I have to wear all of this? Wasn't it just a helmet? - I ask, pointing to the knee pads and other things to avoid getting hurt.
- Yes, the helmet plus all of this. I don't want to feel guilty later if you fracture your skull, so you're going to wear all of this. - he comments calmly.
