Chapter 28: One Hell Of A Forest
I know it's been like forever since I last updated. or atleast that's how I feel. But either way, new chapter so enjoy x.
Kayla's POV
Ding!
The sound of the elevator bell sounded before the doors opened. The first thing I saw was Dylan's face that lit up with a smile as soon as he saw us. From behind me, I could hear a huff escaping Shane's lips which caused me to roll my eyes.
Something has been off with him ever since we left Aunt Lila's room after asking for permission from our moms. I tried recalling what could've put him in such a mood.
I remembered that he seemed a little distant after I ended my call with Dylan. We were teasing each other over the phone. Could that have annoyed him? Dylan and I teasing each other? But why would that even affect him unless he...no, I can't just jump to conclusions. Especially one that is as absurd as him having feelings for me.
But I couldn't just watch him be down by himself so I knew I had to do something. We walked out of the elevator and followed Dylan to wherever his car was located. I slowed down my pace to get to the back of the group where Shane was trailing.
"Hey."
He looked up at me, and there was a little surprise in his eyes.
"Hey." There was the huskiness in his voice that calmed me for some reason.
He smiled, but I felt that the spark in his smile was lost somewhere. But I'll make sure that that would be changed soon.
"So...are you excited to see Epping Forest?" I asked, trying to make conversation.
"Yeah, I guess." He seemed to want to say something more but was holding himself back. I watched as he pursed his lips as if he was in thought.
"What is it?" I prodded, sensing the hesitation that was making me grow curious.
"What?"
"You wanted to say something else."
"No I didn't." He looked down at his shoes as he walked. He had on some scuffled navy Converse that looked good in the rugged sort of way.
"Yes, you did."
"You're not going to give up, huh." He tilted his head to face me, with an emotion that I couldn't pinpoint swirling in his eyes. I noticed a ghost of a smile touching his lips.
"Nope."
There was a moment of silence before I heard him whisper something under his breath which very much sounded like 'screw it'.
"Do you want to sit beside me for the ride?"
I looked up at him, shocked. Of course I was overjoyed that he had asked me and I just wasn't expecting it. I guess that I had forgotten to answer his question in my shock because he started rambling again.
"Unless, you want to sit next to Dylan in the front then whatever that's fine too I just thought that maybe...I don't know...Nevermind I just..." I don't think I'd ever forget the almost invisible tint of pink on his cheeks that I caught in the low lighting.
He needs to stop always doing this. Rambling and being all nervous. It's just too adorable, I think I'm going to melt.
I'll die before he knows I ever thought that.
"Shane." There was a small smile playing on my lips.
"Yeah."
"Shut up. I'm sitting beside you. For sure." I could feel the smile stretch on my lips that I couldn't help when he started rambling.
