"I don't think we've ever spent two weeks on an assignment, Mr. Schue," Tina pointed out over the excited clatter of applause as everyone stared at the board where Mr. Schue had written 'THE BEATLES' in big letters.
"Hey, the Beatles are so epic that we need two weeks to do them justice," Mr. Schue replied. "This week is all about the early years of the Beatles, when all they had was a belief in each other and a belief that together they could do anything."
"Ugh. The school year feels like it's never-ending, and now we're wasting two whole weeks on a band from the 1940s?" Kitty complained. "Seriously, can anyone still relate to the Beatles?"
Melanie rolled her eyes from where she leaned comfortably into Sam's chest, his arm slung loosely over her shoulders, his thumb brushing soothing circles into her hand.
"Pretty much the entire world," Blaine answered, not even sparing Kitty a glance.
"Yeah, I can definitely still relate," Ryder added.
"Why? Were the Beatles dyslexic and catfished by transsexuals?" Kitty snapped, turning to him.
"And you wonder why everybody hates you," Tina scoffed.
"I wish I was at the bottom of the pyramid just so I could drop you," Melanie muttered, glaring at Kitty. Sam's chest shook with a quiet laugh behind her.
"When George Harrison was a kid, he was teased because his dad was a bus driver," Marley chimed in.
"John Lennon's dad wasn't even around. He walked out when John was five," Jake added, earning approving nods and points from Ryder and Mr. Schue.
"They were basically the catalyst for the teen idol boy band craze," Melanie pointed out. "Without them, we probably wouldn't have *NSYNC or One Direction."
"Are they really a boy band if they play instruments and write their own songs?" Sam asked, tilting his head.
"I don't really know the Beatles; I'm a little on the black side," Unique shrugged.
"And Ringo Starr was a sickly kid, which probably means he spent a lot of time sitting down," Artie added.
"And they still decided to form a band," Mr. Schue said. "Which changed the world. Now, you guys are really going to have to challenge yourselves this week. Bring your A-plus games. Perform these classic songs in new and exciting ways. If we push ourselves to a whole new level—like the Beatles constantly did—we can win back-to-back national championships and form a New Directions dynasty."
The choir room erupted into cheers just as the bell rang.
"All right, see you guys tomorrow," Mr. Schue called as everyone packed up.
"God, I hate Kitty," Melanie muttered as she and Sam exited the choir room, his arm still comfortably draped over her shoulders.
"Understandable, but, you're both in glee club," Sam reasoned. "We kinda need to be unified if we want to win nationals. Maybe you should bury the hatchet."
Melanie stared at him like he'd grown a second head before letting out a disbelieving laugh. "The only hatchet Kitty's burying is one in my back. That girl is a two-faced bitch."
Sam chuckled. "All right, I tried. But I gotta say—as much as I hate that you're in a bad mood, seeing you all fired up is kinda hot." He leaned in, murmuring the last part into her ear.
A shiver ran down her spine, and reactively she leaned into him more. "Well, that's good to know, because I'm gonna be in one, a hell of a lot more," she sighed. "Ever since Brittany graduated and Blaine quit, Cheerios practice has been miserable. Bree and the others make Kitty look like a saint."
