"What are you doing here?" Rachel asked as they walked into the auditorium, entering from the opposite side just as the Trouble Tones arrived.
"Shelby told us she had something to show us. What are you doing here?" Mercedes asked, crossing her arms.
"Mr. Schue said the same thing," Finn replied with a shrug.
"Let me guess, he wants to combine choirs for Sectionals," Santana quipped, rolling her eyes. "Well, it's not gonna happen. The Trouble Tones are here to stay. So why don't you shuffle your busted choir off our stage?"
"Look, you guys, we can compete without being enemies, all right? We don't have to get vicious," Finn reasoned, holding his hands up in a placating gesture.
"Oh, I think we do, Soft Serve," Santana shot back with a smirk. "See, the Trouble Tones are 3F: fierce, femme, phenomenal." Melanie raised three fingers, lowering one with each word Santana listed.
"Oh, and, guys, hurry up and grab some moist towels. We have to keep Finn wet before we can roll him back into the sea," Santana added, her tone dripping with mockery.
Melanie nudged her lightly, her brows furrowed in disapproval. "Come on, Santana," she murmured, her voice low but firm.
Santana rolled her eyes but didn't respond.
"Okay, you know what, Santana?" Rachel interjected, stepping forward. "Finn is in great shape, and your meanness only highlights your own personal insecurities."
"And, Rachel, your mustache is thicker than a Middle Eastern dictator's," Santana shot back with a wicked grin.
Rachel's jaw dropped, but before any more insults could fly, the sound of guitar strumming echoed through the auditorium. Both show choirs turned to see Mr. Schue and Ms. Cochran walk up, singing in harmony.
"Is this what having a stroke feels like? Because I like it," Brittany whispered with a dreamy smile, earning furrowed brows from Melanie and Mercedes, who exchanged confused glances as they swayed awkwardly to the music.
"You and I/You and I" by Will Schuester and Shelby Cochran.
"Shue, Shelby, I think we can all admit that was weirdly amazing," Rachel remarked with a small smile. "But what exactly was the point?"
"That sometimes bringing together two conflicting things can create something totally unexpected," Mr. Schue explained.
"We're not combining Glee Clubs, Mr. Schue," Mercedes stated firmly.
"That's not what I'm talking about," Mr. Schue clarified, gesturing toward Shelby. "Shelby and I agree that with Sectionals coming up for both of us, it's time we all got serious—with some friendly competition."
"Each group is going to put together their own mash-up to perform head-to-head," Shelby added, her tone bright with enthusiasm. "For the first annual McKinley High Mash-Off."
The two teachers declared "mash-off" in unison, prompting a wave of excited applause from most of the students.
Everyone seemed energized by the idea—everyone except Santana.

Melanie sat at lunch with Santana, Brittany, and Mercedes, pushing her pasta around on her tray as Santana's voice broke through the hum of cafeteria chatter.
"We've got a dodgeball competition against the New Directions," Santana announced, smirking like she'd just declared war.
Brittany nodded enthusiastically. "This is going to be so much fun!"
