"So how does it work with gay marriage? You take his last name, or does he take yours, or do you both hyphenate—?" Sam questioned, laying on top of the grand piano in the choir room.
"I vote you hyphenate," Melanie suggested from her seat beside Blaine. "Taking your 'husband's' last name is a misogynistic form of claiming the other's identity. I mean, it's a partnership, right? Why would you not have each other's name?"
"I'd totally be Sam Evans-Park." Sam added proudly.
Melanie smiled, leaning up to give the boy a soft kiss on the lips in a Spider-Man-esque upside-down kiss.
"Right now, I'm honestly just excited that Kurt said yes," Blaine admitted, glancing at the two while lazily playing random keys on the piano. "Hey, are you guys looking forward to prom?" he asked, leaning his elbows on top of the instrument.
"Yeah... I guess." Melanie let out a soft sigh.
Blaine and Sam both looked at her with furrowed brows.
"Sorry, I am. It's just..." She shrugged lightly, twisting one of her rings around her finger. "It's our very last prom together. Or ever..." she trailed off. "I don't know. I guess I'm a little sad about all of these lasts."
Blaine squeezed her arm comfortingly.
"Ignore me. I'm just tired. I was up all night," Melanie added.
Blaine grimaced immediately. "Okay, I love you two, but I do not need to know—"
"Not with Sam," Melanie clarified quickly, rolling her eyes.
"I wish that's what we were doing," Sam muttered under his breath, earning a playful smack to the stomach from Melanie.
"I was on the phone with Tina. We were talking about our prom dresses," Melanie explained.
Just then, Mr. Schue walked in. "Come on, guys, we're back with the Beatles!"
The glee club clapped as the trio moved away from the piano and toward the chairs where everyone else was sitting.
"We're leaving the mop-tops behind and moving into their experimental years. Now, the Rubber Soul album marked a turning point for the group, where they literally and figuratively let their hair down. Now, the Beatles were the biggest musical act in the world. They could have remained in their comfort zones, but instead, they risked everything to explore new musical worlds. They had something important to say, and they weren't going to let something as silly as the fear of failure get in their way," Mr. Schue explained passionately, pacing slowly in front of the room.
"Good afternoon, McKinley High." Principal Sue's voice rang over the P.A., cutting off Mr. Schue. "This year, the proms are being fused into one giant Brundleprom."
"What's a Brundleprom?" Marley questioned, with furrowed brows.
"I don't get that reference," Jake mumbled beside her.
"That's from The Fly," Ryder snapped his fingers knowingly.
"And now for the moment that will crush ninety-nine percent of your misguided views about your own popularity," Sue continued.
Melanie straightened slightly in her seat.
"Here are your nominees for Prom King. First, Blaine Anderson..."
The whole choir room erupted into cheers and whistles.
"...Mohamed Omar, Artie Abrams..."
The room burst into applause again, this time more surprised than excited.
