It had been a couple of weeks since I told Katie that we couldn't really talk much at work, or if we were hanging out with mutual friends.
When we saw each other at work we were polite and friendly, but I didn't engage in conversation with her.
I hadn't hangout with my co-workers all together either, just Devin a few times.
On the second Saturday in July, Brandon came up to me at work.
"I'm having people over tonight after work. You're coming," he said.
I looked at Brandon and asked him jokingly, "Is that a demand?"
"Yeah. You haven't come to my house in a few weeks. You're coming tonight, I'm making you. Obviously, you don't have to swim. But come hang out."
I looked at Brandon, "Fine. I'll stop by my house and then I'll come to yours."
"Hell yeah. It'll be fun," Brandon grinned at me.
Devin came up to me a few minutes later and asked, "Are you going to Brandon's?"
"I am. Please tell me you are."
He nodded and then lowered his voice, "I just have to be back at my apartment by 2 AM. Callum is coming over after his bartending shift."
I smiled at Devin, "I'm sure you'll have fun."
He chuckled, "I hope so. Do you want me to take us to Brandon's? We can stop by your house on the way after work."
I nodded, "That would be great, thanks Dev."
My shift ended, and as Devin and I drove to my house after work so I could stop in and get changed, I said to him, "I want to swim. Going in the water would be nice tonight. But I just can't bring myself to wear a bikini."
"Don't push yourself too much," Devin said, "It's okay if you can't wear a swimsuit yet."
I ran into my room quickly to change as Devin waited out front of my house for a few minutes. I went through my drawers and pulled out a bikini that I owned, and a one-piece. I held them up for a moment, debating as to whether I should wear one.
I can't. Not tonight.
Instead, I put on a pair of jean shorts and a black tank top. I pulled my hair back into a high ponytail and touched up on my makeup very quickly.
I wondered if Katie would be at Brandon's, and how it would be with her in a social situation outside of work.
When we got to Brandon's and went out to the backyard, I spotted out Katie right away in the pool. I noticed that Ivy wasn't with her, and she was standing with Kylie and Deshawn, talking to them.
"I'm not going to swim tonight either," Devin said to me, "I'll dip my feet in the water with you. Let me grab us some drinks."
I sat down by the edge of the pool, took off my sandals, and dipped my feet in the water. It was a humid summer night, the stars were twinkling in the sky, and the song "The Way Life Goes" by Lil Uzi Vert was playing on the Bluetooth speakers.
Devin brought over a Whiteclaw for me, and as he was walking over, Katie waved to me and shot me a smile.
I waved back to her, and noticed that she was wearing a very bright, hot pink bikini top that really showed her chest.
Devin and I engaged in conversation with our co-workers as they swam over to us to talk, and when Katie was in earshot, Devin asked her, "Where is Ivy? She's usually with you."
"She's on a date," Katie said back, "I'm sure Brandon is happy about that."
Katie stuck her tongue out playfully at Brandon and he rolled his eyes and said back, "I'm sorry. Your best friend is loud and annoying."
