Katie's mom drove an old, blue Honda, and when she got out of the car, it was like a spitting image of Katie, just older.

Her mom had the same light blonde hair as her, however it was longer and pulled back into a high ponytail. She wore a short, tight black dress. She also had a lit cigarette in her left hand.

"Katie, is that you?" she asked, looking toward the door.

"Yeah, mom. I'm here with Cameron. What are you doing at home?" Katie asked.

"Oh, I'm coming up!" Katie's mom said, and as she rushed up to the door, she took a drag of her cigarette.

I glanced at Katie, and I could tell that she looked apprehensive.

Katie's mom reached the door, and she looked at Katie and I.

"Look at the two of you! You both look great," she said. Katie's mom had a raspy voice like she had smoked a lot in her day.

"Thanks, Mom," Katie said, "This is Cameron. I'm so glad you finally get to meet her."

"It's really nice to meet you," I said to Katie's mom.

"It's so nice to meet you too, sweetheart," she said with a smile, "Call me Crystal."

"You haven't answered my question yet," Katie said to her mom, "Why are you home? It's 2 AM."

"Let's go inside and chat," Crystal said, and Katie and I followed her inside. Katie closed the front door behind us, and we followed Crystal to the kitchen. She turned on the lights and sat down at the table. Katie and I joined her.

So...what's going on?" Katie asked. I could tell that she was worried.

"I'm going to have to find a new job," Crystal said, "I'm sorry, love. It's just not going to work at the casino."

Katie grew tense, and she stared at her mom. She finally asked, "Did you quit or get fired?"

"I got fired," Crystal said, "I got into a disagreement with a coworker, and I...well, I wound up throwing a drink at her."

"Mom!" Katie groaned, "Why did you throw a drink at her? You're 40, not 21!"

"It wasn't my finest moment, I'll admit it. But she pissed me the fuck off!" Crystal said, "You would've done the same."

"No, mom. I wouldn't have," Katie sighed.

"Okay, fine. You have more self-control than me. Don't worry, hon. I'll find a new job right away. I don't want you to be concerned," Crystal said and took a drag of her cigarette.

At the same time, Katie smoked her vape. She then said, "Okay. I believe you."

I don't think she does.

"Have you ever gotten fired from a job?" Crystal asked me.

"Me? Oh, no. I haven't," I said to Crystal, "But no shame in it."

Crystal chuckled and smiled at me, "You're a sweetheart. I can tell."

Katie smiled at me and said to her mom, "She is."

Crystal then started to get up from the table, "I'm going to go to my room, watch some trash TV, and wind down from this night."

"Sounds good, Mom," Katie said, and Crystal gave me one last wave, and then walked out of the kitchen.

Katie watched as her mom left, and she then leaned back in her chair and closed her eyes for a moment.

"I thought this job was maybe going to last," Katie said, opening her eyes, "I had over 6 months of not worrying about my mom not having a stable income. I guess I was wrong."
