Looking at MSW programs with Kim made me feel like I had at least some control over my life, which was something that had seriously been lacking the past months.
We sat down together the next day, Kim's MacBook in front of us, and we looked at MSW programs in the area.
"You want to live at home still, right?" Kim asked me.
I nodded, "Yes. I don't want to move out yet. I don't feel ready to. Is that bad? I mean, I'm 23 and I've never lived away from home."
"It's not bad," Kim reassured me, "Everyone does things as their own pace."
"I don't know, I think it's kind of stupid that you don't want to move out yet."
Kim and I turned around from the dining room table to see my younger brother, Timmy, walking into the kitchen.
"Timmy, Cameron doesn't need your terrible advice," Kim said to Timmy.
"It's just my opinion," Timmy shrugged, and opened up the fridge. He then said, "Oh, sweet. I didn't know you made kebabs last night, Kim. Can I have the leftover ones?"
"Sure, go ahead," Kim rolled her dark eyes, "I was saving them for your father."
"He won't care," Timmy said, "He's at work?"
"He is," Kim nodded.
My dad works as an Orthodontist. Him and one of his friends co-own a practice a couple of towns over.
"Cool. He can pick something up on his way back," Timmy said, putting the leftover chicken and vegetable kebabs on a plate and walking out of the kitchen.
"Don't listen to him," Kim looked at me, "He's 20 and doesn't know anything."
"Oh, I know," I said back to Kim with a chuckle, "I know to not listen to a thing he says. Tyler, on the other hand, I'll take into account what he says."
"He's wise beyond his years," Kim said, "He always has been. Timmy has always been a little menace, and you've always been sweet as can be. Nothing has changed."
Though Kim calls Timmy a menace quite often, she is very close with him. Timmy has no relationship at all with our biological mom, and has always considered Kim his mom.
And whether Kim knows it or not, I've always considered her mine as well.
I wasn't exactly looking forward to work that night.
Saturday nights are always crazy, and tonight I just wasn't in the mood to deal with, well, people.
When I got to work, Brandon came up to me and said, "I invited everyone from work over to my house after our shift to swim. You in?"
I looked at Brandon for a moment and then asked him, "Can I come but not swim? I'll dip my feet in the water."
Brandon shrugged, "Sure. I know Devin isn't working tonight but he said he would come."
"Oh, good," I said, "It's always better when he's there."
Brandon stared at me for a moment and then shook his head, "I will never in a million years know why you and him aren't together."
"We're best friends, Brandon. That's all," I said back.
Brandon rolled his dark eyes, "Yeah. Whatever you say."
Brandon has no idea that Devin is gay, and of course, like most people I work with, think that Devin and I secretly hooked up.
I noticed that Katie wasn't at work, and I wondered if she would be at Brandon's later on. I asked him as he walked by me toward the end of my shift.
