I never thought that there was going to be someone that Tristan dated after me.
I truly thought that he was the one, and I think that for a long time there, he thought that I was the one as well.
I genuinely enjoyed spending time with Tristan. We made each other laugh, and everything just felt easy around him. I loved everything from morning walks in the park near his neighborhood to 3 am diner runs together.
The first time Tristan asked me to hangout was not long after I started working at The Smokehouse. We had a flirty vibe going on at work, and it was obvious that we were attracted to each other. After work one night we decided to go to a bar together, just the two of us.
From there, it catapulted into a full-fledged relationship.
I got to know him to his core and he did the same for me. He knew all of my flaws and loved them anyway. Or at least, I thought he did.
The thought of having to do that all over again with someone was terrifying.
I thought my forever was going to be with Tristan, and I had wanted it to be with him.
But I had to accept that was just not going to be the case.
Plus, I now had his new girlfriend on my mind, as crazy as that sounds.
I kept thinking about my and Katie's conversation at Brandon's party.
I cannot be the only one who felt something in the air between us.
It was a feeling that I had to ignore. I kept telling myself that it was just one conversation between us where I felt a connection.
The next time I saw Katie at work was the Wednesday after Brandon's party. When she saw me, she gave me a bright smile and waved my way.
I did the same back.
Leah, who was at the host stand, seemed to take notice.
"You and Katie are getting along well. I didn't expect that," she said to me.
"Honestly, neither did I. However, she's nothing but nice to me. Do I love that she's dating my ex-boyfriend? No. But any animosity I have is toward him, not her."
Leah looked at me, "You are way more mature than me. I wouldn't be able to do it."
"I'm surprising myself with this one," I said back.
As my shift neared its end, and I was in the kitchen doing side work, Katie came up to me.
"Hey, I wanted to ask you something," she said to me.
I turned to look at her, and when I did, she was already looking at me.
"What's up?" I asked her.
"I'm asking some people from work if they want to go to a country bar tomorrow. It just opened in town, and it looks fun. Do you want to come? Devin already said he would come," Katie said to me.
"Devin? At a country bar?"
That was my first reaction.
Katie laughed, "I know, it doesn't seem like his vibe, But I wanted to include everyone. He seemed willing to go."
"I'll go too, then," I said, "I've never been to a country bar."
"They're fun, even if you don't like country music," Katie said to me. She then paused before adding, "Don't worry, Tristan won't be there. He's working."
"Thanks for letting me know," I said to Katie, "What time tomorrow?"
"I was thinking around 9 PM everyone could meet at the bar. Do you have my number? I'll text you the name of the bar and you can let me know when you arrive."
