Ivy wound up waking up a week after she had her surgery, on February 21st.
Katie and Brandon were there when she woke up, it was during the day when I had class. My phone had vibrated a few times during class, and I was extremely tempted to look it, but I waited after my professor was done speaking.
I had multiple texts from Katie and Brandon telling me that Ivy had woken up and that she was talking to them.
I really wished I could have gone to the hospital, however I had work that night, and I wasn't able to. I told Katie that I would come over after my shift and she could fully update me on Ivy.
It wasn't very busy at work, and I wound up getting cut early, so I made my way over to Katie's right after.
Katie and I sat close to each other on her bed, and she played with my hair mindlessly as she updated me on Ivy.
She seemed to be all there cognitively. She didn't remember the accident happening, but she remembered everything leading up to it, such as her and Brandon going out to dinner in the city. Katie said she seemed somewhat out of it, but she was able to hold a conversation well.
The issue was with her legs. She wasn't able to move them at all and felt completely numb.
The Doctor said that this can happen, but she could very well regain movement in her legs over time.
Or...she wouldn't at all.
"So there's a chance she is paralyzed permanently?" I asked Katie, taking in the news.
Katie nodded, "Yes, it's a possibility. I'm hoping that it is just temporary. I'm just glad that Ivy is alive, but things are going to be tough if she winds up not being able to walk again."
"I'm going to hope for the best," I put my hand on Katie's, "She's already come this far."
Katie smiled at me and nodded. I could see how tired she was. She had bags under her eyes, and her skin was paler than usual. She had hardly slept since the accident happened, and the added stress of worrying about her mom wasn't helping either.
I said to Katie, "If you're up for it, I think we should do something fun this weekend. Maybe we can go out to a club or something. I saw that there is going to be an early 2000s hip hop and pop night on Saturday at a club in the city. I completely understand if you aren't up for it, I just wanted to suggest it."
Katie took a moment before saying, "I think I need that. I need a night of fun."
I smiled at Katie, "Then we'll go to it. I think it will be a lot of fun."
Katie grinned at me, "Thank you for suggesting it, Cam. You knew exactly what I needed."
I leaned over and kissed Katie's cheek, "Anything for you."
One of the best parts about having a girlfriend is being able to get ready to go out together. Katie and I got ready to go out on Saturday night at her house. We even wore similar outfits, jean mini skirts with colorful belts and cropped shirts. We wanted to channel the early 2000s in our outfits.
I looked at myself in Katie's mirror. I wasn't used to wearing crop tops.
"Does this look okay on me?" I asked her, "I feel like I don't look that great."
Katie came up and hugged me from behind, wrapping her arms around my waist.
"You look stunning," she said in my ear, "You'll be the hottest girl there."
I turned around and smiled at Katie, "Please. That'll be you."
My eyes drifted down to her cleavage and then back up to her face, just to make a point.
