Watching someone you love deal with something very difficult is tough.
Ivy was placed in a medically induced coma after her surgery. We were told that she had coded on the table, and because of that she was placed on a ventilator, and in a medically induced coma.
She was expected to wake up. But we had no idea when, and how extensive her injuries were going to be.
Katie was not in a good place because of this, as expected. I could tell that she was trying to remain strong, especially in front of Ivy's family and Brandon, but I knew how hard this was on her.
To make matters even worse, Katie suspected that her mom was using again.
It had been four days since the accident, and Ivy hadn't woken up yet. Katie had stayed until 1 AM at the hospital with Ivy's mom, and when she came home, her mom, who didn't have work that night, was passed out on the couch with the TV on.
Katie told me that she woke her up, and she seemed extremely out of it, to the point that Katie knew it wasn't just her being tired.
I was driving home from Devin's house when she called me.
"My mom is totally high as fuck," she said, "I can't find any pills, but she's not sober. I know it."
"Fuck. I'm so sorry," I said back to Katie, "Just what you need on top of everything else."
"I almost don't even have the energy to confront her about it. I woke her up, she got off the couch and walked to her room like a zombie. You know, I have tried so many times to get her sober, and this time around, I find myself thinking that if she wants to fuck up her life again, there's nothing I can do about it."
"She's a grown woman. You shouldn't have to be the one to take care of her or get her to be sober."
"Tell me about it. I love my mom, but I just cannot fucking deal with this right now. I swear, if she gets fired from her job, I will lose it."
"Do you want to come to my house?" I asked Katie, "I know it's late, but I feel like you need a change of scenery."
"You know what, that actually sounds really nice. I'd love nothing more than to be with you right now."
As Katie and I lay on my bed that night, in the darkness of my room, she didn't speak much. I could tell that she was appreciating my company, but I knew that a lot was on her mind.
"What if she doesn't wake up?" Katie suddenly said, referring to Ivy.
"That would be the worst possible outcome," I turned my head to look at Katie, who was next to me, "It would be fucking horrible. The doctors seem optimistic that won't happen, and we just have to believe them, and really hope for the best."
Katie looked back at me and said, "You know, I've never really believed in God or anything. But I've been finding myself literally pleading with some kind of higher power to not let Ivy die."
"I've also always been on the fence about believing in God. It seems like too many terrible things happen in this world for me to be a believer. Hence, what just happened to Ivy."
"And you losing your baby," Katie said to me, quietly.
"That's when I really started questioning my belief in a higher power," I nodded, "If Ivy doesn't wake up...that'll really make me a non-believer."
"She doesn't deserve this," Katie spoke, "I know that Ivy can be, well, Ivy. But she really is a good person. She'd do anything for the people that she loves. She wants a family one day, she's wanted to get married and be a mom since she was young. She deserves to have all of that. Plus, she's been so happy with Brandon. It can't all be taken away from her too soon."
