TW: This chapter mentions abortion, and it will be mentioned in more detail next chapter.

My 24th birthday landed right after Thanksgiving.

When Tristan and I broke up, I was dreading the idea of holidays and my birthday. I thought that I was going to be lonely and depressed without him, but now that was not the case.

I had Katie.

Plus, I was much happier in my relationship with Katie than I had been with Tristan for a long time.

Devin held a small Friendsgiving at his apartment, and he surprised me at the end of it by bringing out a cake and candles for my birthday.

"Devin," I said, "You didn't have to do this."

"I did," he smiled at me, "You deserve it. You deserve to be celebrated, Cam. Callum's mom baked the cake, and she owns a bakery, so I'm sure it's delicious."

Devin was right. The vanilla cake with buttercream icing was absolutely delicious, as well as the two other pies Callum brought that his mom baked.

I noticed at the end of Friendsgiving, Katie had her phone out texting, and she looked annoyed as she did so.

I wondered what the issue could be.

Her mom had just gotten a new job at a different casino a few days prior, so I knew it likely didn't have to do with that.

"Are you okay?" I whispered to Katie, who was sitting next to me.

"I'm a bit irritated," she said, "I'll tell you when we leave."

After we left Friendsgiving, I asked Katie what was going on when we got in her car.

"My brother is trying to get me to go to Thanksgiving at my dads house. My mom is working this year, and he doesn't want to be alone on Thanksgiving, so my dad invited him, and me apparently. My dad and Kyle are pretty close."

"Is he close with your stepmom too?" I asked Katie.

"I wouldn't say he is close with her, but he doesn't despise Nikki like I do. I get along with my dad perfectly fine, she is the issue. I don't want to go, I just feel bad telling Kyle that."

Katie's phone then vibrated, and when she looked at the caller ID, she asked me, "Do you mind if I answer this? It's my dad."

"Go right ahead."

Katie answered, "Hey, dad. What's up?"

There was a pause before Katie said, "No, I can talk. I'm with my girlfriend, but she doesn't mind."

Another pause.

"Yes, I have a girlfriend," Katie said, and she squeezed my thigh affectionately.

I could indistinctly hear Katie's dad responding, and Katie said back, "I know, Kyle told me about Thanksgiving. Dad...I know you're saying that Nikki will be on her best behavior, but I don't believe it."

Katie's dad spoke again.

Katie sighed and responded, "Okay. I'll come to your house. I'd like to see you, too."

Katie's eyebrows raised at her dad's response, and she then said, "Can my girlfriend come with? I mean, I would bring her, but she likely will be with her family. Thanks for extending an invite, though."

When Katie hung up, she looked at me and said, "Please do not feel obligated to come with me. Of course, I would love to bring you with me, but it's no big deal if you can't."

"I'll come with you," I said to Katie, "Anything to make it easier for you. Kim will understand that I can't go to her mom's house this year."

Katie smiled at me, "Thank you so much. I think Nikki will have even more of a reason to be on her best behavior when you're there."
