I wasn't expecting to wake up the next morning to a text from Joanna asking if I wanted to grab coffee.

"Joanna texted me," I said to Katie, who had just woken up a few moments ago, "Asking me if I wanted to get coffee."

"That was quick," Katie said, sitting up against her headboard, "Are you going to tell her 'yes'?"

"I guess so," I nodded, "I just hope it won't be weird."

"What exactly happened again between the two of you?" Katie asked me, "I know you and her used to hookup, and she wound up catching feelings. But when did that happen?"

"When I had my first 'serious' boyfriend right after high school. She started acting strange and avoiding me. It was making me upset, so I asked her what was going on. At first she made up excuses, that she was busy and that she was going through her own things. Eventually, she told me that the real reason was because she had feelings for me, and couldn't stand to see me with my boyfriend. She was the one essentially that ended the friendship. I thought we could move past it."

"I'm sorry that she chose to not be your friend anymore," Katie said to me, "I guess her feelings were pretty strong for you?"

"Strong enough that she couldn't stand to be my friend anymore."

"And she's in law school now?" Katie asked, "So she must be super smart."

Katie looked down for a moment, and I could sense insecurity.

"Book smart, sure," I said to Katie, "But socially, she wasn't the best. She could never charm people into giving you amazing tips the way you do."

Katie laughed and said, "I appreciate the sentiment, Cameron. You're cute."

I smiled at Katie, "Glad you think so."

Katie leaned over and gave me a gentle kiss on the cheek, "Of course. Tell Joanna you'll get coffee with her. I support it."

I couldn't help but appreciate how chill Katie was about this. I knew that if it was Tristan, he would have never allowed it, and I would have listened.

I texted Joanna back letting her know we could grab coffee, and she asked me if I was free that day. I didn't work until later on, so I agreed to meet her at a local coffee shop called Calm Waters Coffee.

I arrived at Calm Waters first and texted Joanna asking if I could get her anything. She texted me back saying that she wanted to look at the menu first.

As I waited for her for just a few minutes, thoughts kept swirling.

How much of my life am I going to have to delve into?

Am I going to tell her about Tristan? About the baby?

When Joanna walked in, she immediately grinned and waved in my direction. She then motioned to the register, letting me know she was going to order first.

She came back to the table I had grabbed for us a few minutes later with a drink in hand.

"What did you get?" I asked her as she sat down across from me.

"A macchiato," she said, "How about you?"

"A vanilla latte," I responded, "I assume you haven't tried it here since you just moved back unless I'm wrong."

"No, you're right," Joanna said and took a sip of her drink, "It's really good. Great suggestion to come here."

"I'm glad you like it," I said, giving her a small smile.

With her blue eyes on me, Joanna said, "I was surprised to hear that you're a server, even if it's just in the interim of you getting your MSW."

"Why did it surprise you?" I asked Joanna.
