Though Katie had portrayed confidence on the phone while talking to Tristan, when she hung up, I could tell she was bothered.
She closed her eyes for a split second and sighed.
"Are you okay?" I asked her.
"I'm alright," Katie looked at me, "Are you okay?"
"Being here, next to you. Yeah, I'm okay."
Katie gave me a small smile, "That's how I'm feeling, Cameron."
I smiled back at Katie and said, "You know, I think we're at the level where you can call me 'Cam'. If you want."
Katie chuckled, "I'm honored to be at that level. Maybe I'll start calling you that."
"Is Katie short for anything?" I asked her.
"Kaitlin. But I don't think anyone has ever called me that. Even my mom when she's been mad at me."
I nudged Katie playfully and said, "I'm sorry, though. That we got interrupted."
"It's okay," Katie said, "We can continue this anytime. Pleasing you was honestly enough for me. I just hope we do this again."
"We will," I said, taking a hold of Katie's hand in mine, "I promise."
At this point, Katie and I were still standing at the dim entrance of her house. I glanced at my Apple Watch and saw that it was now past 2 AM.
Tristan must've really wanted to talk to her.
"Want to go to my room?" Katie asked me, "I'll turn on a light, so we don't have to be in the dark."
"Sure," I nodded, "I'd like to see your bedroom."
Katie laughed, "I promise, it's not much to see. Well, actually, there is a lot to see, clothes everywhere. I'm not the most organized person. If I knew you were coming over, I would've cleaned."
Katie led me up the steps, and to the room at the end of the hallway. When I stepped in, I realized she wasn't kidding. There were clothes strewn all over the floor of her room and some on her bed. Her vanity was cluttered with makeup, and her closet, which was half open, had clothes slipping off the hangers.
Katie glanced at me, "You're judging me, aren't you?"
"Of course not," I said, and I meant it, "Not everyone is super organized."
"Let me guess. You are?"
I smiled gently at Katie, "Well, yes. I am."
"I knew you would be," Katie said to me, "That's a compliment."
Katie and I sat down on her bed, next to each other, with our feet hanging off the side.
"I'm surprised that Tristan showed up," she said to me, "After last night, he seemed to be done with me, and I was done with him. Even if you weren't in the picture, I would've never taken him back. Our relationship already wasn't good, this was just the tipping point."
"I think you'll be much happier without him," I said, looking into Katie's pretty blue eyes.
She looked right back at me and said, "I think so as well."
Katie then placed her hand on mine. Her hand was so smooth and soft, and I loved the feeling of it on mine.
Katie then asked me, "Why exactly did you and Tristan break up? He told me that he 'wasn't ready for something so serious at the time'. Which I didn't think much of at first, until he told me about you losing the baby. Then it kind of changed how I viewed him."
