Chapter two

"The night has only just begun."

That night, they were all were sitting at the dinner table, as Susannah and Brooke sat at the heads of the table facing each other, Laurel, Belly and Hannah's sat on the left side while Steven, Jeremiah and Conrad sat on the right, where underneath the table Conrad's foot was intertwined with Hannah's as they all were enjoying their dinner, Steven was showing Jeremiah something on his phone as the two laughed "Steven, I swear to god, if you look at that phone one more time, I'm putting it in the screen basket." Laurel shared, as Steven brought the phone down.

"It's just that we want to see your beautiful faces." Susannah shared "and have normal conversation." Brooke shared, as the two drank their wine "can dinner be a screen free zone? You know, like the olden days." Susannah shared, as Laurel and Brooke laughed, but Steven was still looking at his phone "Steven." Jeremiah told him, as he snatched it from him and stood up, throwing it to the extra chair as it landed in it "dude, are you kidding me?" Steven asked "boom! Nailed it." Jeremiah told them, as he sat back down.

"Okay, okay, okay, we get it, you've been working out." Steven shared "ooh! You're just jealous because Jere has a better body than you." Belly shared "uh, no, actually, it's all about the lean look now. Otherwise, you can't wear tailored suits." Steven shared, as they all laughed "sure, sure." Jeremiah told him "tailored suits." Conrad said, as Hannah furrowed her brows "I was more focused on the lean look? what..what is that exactly?" she asked, as they all laughed again.

Steven looked at Hannah and Conrad "when are you two leaving for training camp?" he asked and when he did, the two looked at him, having expected that question but weren't sure how to give people an answer "uh, he quit football and she quit cheerleading." Jeremiah shared "wh..wait, really? You guys quit?" Steven asked "mm-hmm." Conrad told him, as Hannah shrugged "are you kidding me, man? I'd..I'd kill to play college ball. And Hannah you loved cheerleading, you showed us the routines all the time." Steven shared.

"They can always change their minds." Susannah shared, but Brooke didn't because she knew why the kids had quit but she wasn't gonna let Susannah know that Conrad found out about what was going on when she didn't want him to "I'm not gonna change my mind. I was just gonna sit on the bench all season anyways." Conrad told her "Conrad." Hannah told him, as Conrad looked back to her.

"Well, if you're not playing football anymore and your not cheerleading, what are the two of you gonna do all summer?" Laurel asked "oh, guys, you can work at the club. Yeah, with me and Jere." Steven shared "yeah." Jeremiah stated "I'm not gonna work at the club." Conrad told them, as Hannah chuckled "yeah, no thanks." she told them, as Belly looked to the two with furrowed brows "wait, you guys are working this summer?" she asked "yeah, I'm lifeguarding and Steven's working at the snack shop." Jeremiah shared, as him and Steven fist bumped, snapping their fingers.

"Wow, the ladies are gonna love you two!" Hannah voiced, laughing "oh, girls we almost forgot." Susannah shared, as she stood up, grabbing the envelopes off the hutch in the room "we. Meaning me and Brooke having a surprise for you two." she shared, walking behind the chairs she handed one to Belly and the other to Hannah "so, this is why you two had to stop by the country club." Laurel realized "mm." Susannah said as she looked to Brooke who smiled.

"What, uh, wh..wh..what are those?" Steven asked, as Hannah and Belly opened the envelopes, revealing letters inside "this year Hannah is going to be a debutante so we thought that wrangling Belly an invitation too would be a good way to get the girls to do something together." Brooke shared, as Belly furrowed her brows "is that the thing where the girls where white dresses and curtsy?" she asked "it's more then just that Belly." Hannah told her "Hannah's right, it's when a girl comes of age and is presented to society. I..I know it sounds silly, but me and Brooke swear it's fun. GIrls come from all over New England to cousins just to be apart of it." Susannah shared.
