Chapter twenty six
"How that summer ended."
Having walked back back up to the house, Hannah walked through the backdoor, still wearing her deb dress and the veil, Susannah noticed her from the living room, Hannah hadn't thought anyone else would be up "early morning walk on the beach?" Susannah asked her, with a smile on her face, expecting Hannah to have the same, but as Hannah turned to her she had tears in her eyes, and as she did, Susannah's eyes went wide as she put her coffee mug down on the table, she held her arms out, as Hannah walked over to her, sitting down on the couch, letting her hug her.
"We're destroying each other. And..and I asked him what he wanted and he told me he wanted me but not..not like this. And I..I told him to let me go because I thought that was right but I..I don't know." Hannah whispered to her, her voice breaking, and as she did, Susannah ran her hand through her hair, having had a feeling this was gonna happen with how the two had been acting all summer, but after watching them dance together, she wanted to be wrong, she wanted to be so wrong, but she wasn't, especially as she saw Belly and Conrad walk in together, hands intertwined.
And as she did, her body stiffened as her hand stopped moving through her hair, in which Hannah then turned around, seeing the two of them standing there, and as she did, she glared at them, as she stood up, walking out of the living room "Hannah.." Conrad told her, as he ran after her, just like on the fourth of July, where the two went up the stairs, Hannah pulled the veil off of her head, as she walked up to her bedroom door, slamming it open, she threw the veil on the bed, and as she did, she grabbed junior mint and Conrad's flannel that were on it, and turned to the door.
"Hannah, let me explain.." Conrad told her "Belly?" Hannah asked him, raising her brows "Belly!" she voiced, throwing junior mint and her flannel at him, he caught them "I thought we couldn't be together because you were hurting! That..that we couldn't be together right now because it would destroy us! And how I thought you wanted me meant that you loved me!" she voiced, not caring her who heard her "I do love you. I do." Conrad told her, as he didn't even move from the doorway, he watched as Hannah turned grabbing the photos of all of them off the wall, she threw the first three at him.
Where Conrad ducked, the first one smashed into the wall behind him falling to the floor, he turned and look at it, seeing his arm around her neck where the two were young kids, where Hannah then threw another one at him, hitting him in the back, Conrad turned back to her, she threw the third one as it bounced off junior mint and landed on the ground, shattering, just like her heart was.
And in a way, so was his, because he knew what he had done but he knew there was no other way to let her go unless he just moved on all together, so he did "Hannah, please.." he told her, feeling tears in his eyes, knowing that he messed up, and she wasn't the only one, because he knew by her screaming if Belly hadn't told him already then Jeremiah would've found out from her on what they'd done.
Hannah then turned, grabbing the next three pictures "then why isn't that enough for you! Why can I never be enough for you!" she voiced, turning and throwing them at him, where she hit him in the chest with them, where they fell down and shattered just like the others.
"Because..because what if something happens to you just like it happened to her. Hannah, I can't..I can't lose you. You know that." Conrad told her, as Hannah turned grabbing the last picture off the wall, she held it in her hand, where it was the one where the two of them happened to be looking at each other.
And yet right now? She could barely look at him that way, as she turned throwing it at him, she hit him in the head with it, as it then fell to the floor shattering "Hannah, I can't lose you too." Conrad told her, feeling like this conversation along with needing to say goodbye to one another was a constant one this summer, and now it was really happening, Hannah furrowed her brows "so because you can't lose me? We can't be together? Who does that work out for?" she asked him, as Conrad shook his head "I can't. I'm sorry, Hannah." Conrad told her.
As Hannah nodded "you..you have done this to me again and again and again." she told him, as she stepped toward's him "i can't live like this, Conrad. So now, I'm not just telling you to let me go. I am breaking up with you." she told him, staring into his eyes "I break up with you. And I never wanna see you again." she shared, slamming her bedroom door shut, and as she did, she leaned against it, closing her eyes, she began to fall down it, as she landed on the floor.
And as she did, Conrad then stood outside of it, staring at the door, Steven was leaning out of his room, having watched the whole thing, while Jeremiah stood in the doorway of his room, staring across the way at his brother, while Belly looked at him from the stairs "Jere.." she told him "you kissed my brother?" he asked her "I'm sorry. I didn't think that, you know, like he..I mean we wanted to tell you and Hannah right away, so.." Belly shared "you're already a we?" Jeremiah asked her "no, no, no. I..I just didn't, I didn't want it to be weird." Belly shared.
As Conrad bent down, picking up all the broken picture frames "yeah, well now it is." he said, as he turned walking to his room, throwing it all down on his bed "yeah, he's right!" Jeremiah voiced "no, Jere, please. I mean.." Belly shared "no, no, actually, it's cook. It's cool, I get it. You know, we were just the distraction to keep you two busy while you waited for each other." Jeremiah shared, as he clapped his hands "we're glad it finally happened for you, Belly. It's great timing it's not like my mom has cancer or anything." he shared, as Belly walked up the steps to look at him "Jer, I didn't want to hurt you. You're one of my best friends." she told him.
"No! No, you don't get to call me that." Jeremiah told her, as Belly shook her head "you don't meant that." she told him "I do." Jeremiah told her, as he backed up into his room, he went to slam his door, as he then stopped, looking at her "just so you know, he's gonna break your heart." he told her, as he then slammed the door.
But Hannah even though she was upset get the deb ball dress off on her own, so her mom helped her, where everyone in the house had heard the entire thing, where Hannah had changed her in sweats, her mom told her that Susannah wanted to see her, as she was then downstairs, in what was meant to be Laurel's office.
Susannah held her in her arms on the couch that was in the room, as she ran her hands through her hair "I know what happened. And even without all the screaming and yelling and Connie telling me, I knew." she shared "I'm so sorry." Hannah told her, her voice breaking "don't be sorry." Susannah told her "this wasn't how this summer was supposed to go. And..and I feel like not only is everything changing so fast, but I'm also losing everyone along the way." Hannah shared.
"You're not. It just takes time. You'll find your way back to each other eventually. And this place is always here for you." Susannah told her, as she kissed her on the forehead "but this place is nothing without you." Hannah told her "Hannah..you love this place the same way I do. If anyone can keep the magic going here, it's you. You're my special girl." Susannah told her, and as she did, Hannah leaned into her more "I just wish time would slow down." she told her, and as she did, Susannah smiled "me too." she told her, leaning down and kissing her on the head again, she took a deep breath.
Hannah furrowed her brows "aren't you supposed to call the cleaners?" she asked her, as Susannah took a deep breath "yeah, but not just yet. I wanna stay here in this moment with you a little longer." Susannah told her, as the two of them chuckled.
