Chapter thirty
"Being there for each other."
Still standing there, Hannah and Conrad were still looking at Belly as Belly looked back at them "so this is why you haven't answered any of my phone calls and texts?" Jeremiah asked, as Hannah and Conrad looked back at him "Jere. Jere. Did you not hear what Hannah just said? We're going to lose this house. Mom's house." Conrad shared "why would your dad sell this house?" Belly asked "because he's not the one doing it. It's their Aunt Julia. My parents informed me of it." Hannah shared "Susannah's sister?" Belly asked.
"Half sister. Apparently, the house belonged to both of them. And then when mom.." Conrad shared "where even though she gave it to my parents aunt Julia claims she still owns half of it, so it's a whole thing.." Hannah shared, putting her hand up to her forehead "okay, we'll just call your parents and our dad and figure something out." Jeremiah shared "you think we haven't already done that? He says legally the house is hers along with Hannah's parents and that they need to sort it out for themselves." Conrad shared, as Jeremiah looked to her "well, then dad can buy it from aunt Julia and we'll have joint custody of it or your parents who are super rich can win and buy it off of her." he shared.
"Jeremiah, it's not that easy!" Hannah voiced "yeah, dad doesn't have the money to buy it. Between Brown and Hannah's dad helping out with the medical bills." Conrad shared "yeah, I know how much the medical bills cost because I was there. How long did you know about this and not tell me?" Jeremiah asked, as he looked to Hannah "both of you?" he asked "we're doing this again? What you gonna swing on him again? I dropped everything to come here and take care of this, he followed me, nobody else was supposed to know about this until it was taken care of." Hannah shared.
As Jeremiah chuckled "and this is you two taking care of it? Going AWOL, ditching school, not talking to us." he listed off "fuck school! I don't care!" Conrad voiced "going AWOL? You make it sound like we went a different country! We're in cousins!" Hannah voiced "yeah and you have to go back or you'll both fail your class." Jeremiah shared, and when he did, Hannah remembered how going to Stanford counted on her passing and staying on top of her classes, but that wasn't the most important thing, not right now "how are you going to become a doctor if you fail out of college, Conrad?" Belly asked him, and when she did, Hannah remembered that too, how he told her he changed to pre med.
"You have no idea what you're talking about." Conrad told Belly, as Jeremiah looked from Belly to Conrad "seriously?" he asked, as he pointed at Belly "we went to Brown to check on your ass. You know what? I didn't think you'd pull this shit again. But you don't give a shit about anyone but yourself." he shared "enough!" Hannah voiced, as Jeremiah looked at her and when he did, he scoffed "and I can't believe you'd just let him back in after everything he's done to you. I thought you were better then that." he shared, as he turned walking out of the living room and back down the hallway, where they heard the front door open and close.
And when they did, Hannah shook her head, as she turned around, walking toward's the couch, she sat down and put her head in her hands and as she did, Conrad walked over and crouched down in front of her, knowing the two of them along with her parents had been doing everything to stop this since the moment they found out about it, where Belly looked at them seeing how Conrad went to touch Hannah but hesitated, pulling his hand back.
"Sorry if me being here is weird. So, the..the house.." Belly shared "it's for sale. And Jere doesn't even care." Conrad shared "of course he cares, but he cares about you two more. After everything that happened..you two go missing? I mean, he thought something really bad happened to the both of you. We both did." Belly shared, and as she did, Hannah chuckled, as she looked up at her "the call came two days ago, from my mom saying that somebody put a for sale sign on the front yard." she shared, and as she did, her voice broke.
"She asked me to come here and pull the stupid thing out of the yard so I did. Which was when Conrad arrived, where that sign is now in the garbage because nobody else deserves to see that. So whatever he thinks is going on here is wrong." she shared, and when she did, Conrad nodded "and I'm gonna use my trust as down payment of the house. Talking to my mom's financial guys in the morning." Conrad shared "and I'm on a four way call tomorrow morning with my parents and our lawyer to see what exactly we can do from here." Hannah shared "oh." Belly said.
"We didn't mean to worry anybody. We're handling things. You guys can go." Conrad told her "you're not the only one's who care about this house. If Jere wants to stay here and help figure things out, that is his decision. And neither of you get to make it for him." Belly shared, as she turned walking out, Hannah huffed, as she stood up, walking around the coffee table and down the hallway "Hannah." Conrad told her "not now." Hannah told him, walking up the stairs and into her room, slamming the door shut.
For the past two nights that the two had been staying at the house, the two were finding out truths about themselves that they hadn't realized while they were off away at college since Susannah died a month ago, where Hannah had been having terrible nightmares, living the day it happened over and over again.
Where she woke up screaming, and when she did, the door to her room opened and Conrad was standing there breathing heavy, and so was Hannah "are you okay?" Conrad asked her, as Hannah looked at him "will you stay with me?" she asked him, as Conrad nodded, he turned around shutting the bedroom door, he then turned walking to her bed, where Hannah had already lifted up the covers, as Conrad climbed into it, putting the covers over himself, and as he did, the two of them laid there not saying anything to each other, just staring at the ceiling.
Until Conrad spoke up "I have nightmares to you know? I know..I know I wasn't there like you were but it still hurts." he shared, knowing his nightmares were not just about losing his mom but about losing her as well "she was your mom. Your allowed to hurt and it's not a feeling that's just gonna go away." Hannah shared "I'm glad your here." Conrad told her "I'm glad your here too." Hannah told him, where as her hand was laying in the middle of the bed, Conrad moved his hand over to her's and squeezed and when he did, Hannah squeezed his hand back.
Where the second night, the two had realized that in this big house, it felt not only safer but comforting with nobody else around that they stay in the same bed, where the two had went into her room, although that night, Conrad had another one of his panic attacks, as the thought of losing this house, losing what was potentially the last part that they had of his mom, of Susannah, was eating him up from the inside out.
And since his mom's death the amount of them he had seemed to increase, yet every time he thought was alone, Hannah always found him, and in those moments she wouldn't call him Conrad, she'd call him Connie, holding his head in her hands and looking into his eyes, bringing his hand up to her heart to help him feel grounded by her heartbeat, telling him she wasn't going anywhere, reminding him that she was right here and that she was always gonna be.
Where that night, the two were then laying in her bed, although Conrad was in her arms just like Susannah used to do with her, where she was running her hand through his hair, Conrad laid his head against her chest, listening to her heartbeat, where the blanket his mom had made was laid over both of them.
Where this night, Belly and Jeremiah were there now, as Hannah lied in her bed, she turned to her bedside table and grabbed her phone, seeing it was late, she started to get worried about Conrad, as she put her phone down, she moved the covers off of her, and stood up, walking to her bedroom door, she opened it, and as she did, she turned looking into his bedroom but he wasn't in there either, as she furrowed her brows, turning around, she walked down the stairs, thinking she was gonna find him having a panic attack.
But instead she walked out the back door and found him sitting by the pool, knowing Belly was in it, she didn't care, as she walked up to him and crouched down to him "you scared me when you didn't come I thought something was wrong." she shared, as Conrad looked to her "I didn't mean to scare you. I just..I didn't think after what happened this morning that you'd want me to stay with you." he shared, and as he did, Hannah put her hands on his face "how I reacted, it was not at all, in anyway meant towards you. And what Jeremiah said to me about you? He doesn't know what he's talking about. And the other?" she asked, turning her head and looking at Belly swimming in the pool.
Where her hands dropped from his face, and as they did, Conrad turned, taking his feet out of the pool, he stood up and held his hand out to Hannah "come on." he told her, and as he did, Hannah turned to him, taking his hand, Conrad pulled her up, where the two turned and began walking inside.
