Kimberly stared at the door ahead of her, feeling dreadful and nervous. Those times she had been speaking with her General, Price had always been by her side. Kimberly cleared her throat as she knocked on the door, opening it and stepping inside. Her stare met Shepherd's, and he didn't seem too surprised to see her.
-"Phoenix. Settle down," Shepherd said, pointing to the chairs in front of his desk. Kimberly shut the door behind her, walking up to his desk. She settled down and looked around. Everything was the same as it always had been. Clean and tidy.
-"I have some things I would like to speak to you about. Firstly I want to hear what you're planning on doing with Yuri. You've been holding him locked down long enough," Kimberly said, seeing how her General was studying her. It felt like he was trying to look for something to point out. A flaw or a doubt in her expression.
-"You were held captive for two years without squealing a word about John's whereabouts. What makes you think Yuri won't hold out just as long?" Shepherd asked, aware that some people could keep their mouth shut no matter how much they were tortured. Kimberly had impressed him given how she had kept her mouth shut. But he still didn't trust her judgement.
-"Yuri is not with Makarov anymore, Sir. I give you my word. He helped me obtain the information I got, he helped me escape. He saved all of our lives in that warehouse. If he wants us dead like Makarov, then he wouldn't have gone through all the damn trouble of saving us," Kimberly said, crossing her arms.
-"When you led your squad a few years back, you became allies with strangers. They betrayed you and killed your squad. What makes you think this Yuri is any different?" Shepherd asked, enjoying himself. He knew Kimberly didn't like to be interrogated with several questions, but she didn't seem like she wanted to back down. For some reason, she really believed in this guy.
-"My judgment was bad back then, I am fully aware. Yuri is different, and we would have been dead by now if he wasn't," Kimberly said, not giving up. "He knows everything about Makarov. He'll be a valuable asset for us in our fight against Makarov."
-"And that's why I doubt him, as you should. If I let him out of that cell and give him a place on your team, and he betrays you all, who do you think will get the blame?" Shepherd asked, crossing his arms.
-"Technically you, but you'll find a way to pin the blame on me anyway," Kimberly said, leaning back in the chair. "So you'll let him get access to our cafeteria and our training facility. You might keep him locked down in the cell through the nights, but he'll get a place on our team for our missions. If he betrays us, put the blame on me. I'll take the consequences if I'm wrong about him."
-"You're willing to risk your entire career for this one man?" Shepherd asked, chuckling at her.
-"Yes. Call me dumb and reckless if you want, but I'm putting my full trust in Yuri. As all of you should. I'll take the responsibility on my shoulders," Kimberly said, refusing to give up. She could see how Shepherd was thinking, uncertain about her judgment.
-"Okay. He'll be let out between 8 in the morning and 7 in the evening. He'll be followed by one of my men, in case he tries to do anything. He'll get a place on your team, but all the responsibilities lay on you. So I hope for your sake that you know what you're doing," Shepherd said, feeling that it was the stupidest decision to make. Her father had suffered from a horrible judgement, and it seemed like she had inherited it. "Onto the next matter."
-"I wanted to ask you if there is any possibility for me to rank up from Sergeant in the non-commissioned officer rank, to Lieutenant in the commissioned officer rank," Kimberly said, getting straight to the point.
