Chapter 3: First Practice
The next afternoon, Soul found himself standing in front of the dance studio, his heart racing with a mix of excitement and nerves. The building was adorned with posters of past performances, and he could hear music thumping from inside. He took a deep breath, reminding himself that this was a chance to start fresh.
He pushed the door open and stepped inside. The studio was spacious, with mirrors lining one wall and polished wooden floors that gleamed under the bright lights. A few students were already there, stretching and chatting. Keeho spotted him immediately and waved him over.
"Hey, Soul! You made it!" Keeho's smile was infectious, and Soul felt a little of his anxiety fade.
"Yeah, I'm here," Soul replied, his voice barely above a whisper.
"Great! We're just getting warmed up," Intak said, giving Soul a friendly nod. Jiung was nearby, practicing a few dance moves, his movements graceful and confident.
As the group gathered in a circle, Keeho clapped his hands to get everyone's attention. "Alright, everyone! Let's start with some basic warm-up routines, then we'll work on choreography for the showcase."
Soul watched as Keeho demonstrated a few stretches, trying to mimic his movements. The warmth of the group made him feel slightly more at ease, even though he could feel the familiar flutter of nerves in his stomach.
"Okay, Soul," Keeho said, glancing at him with encouragement. "Just follow along as best as you can. Don't worry if you mess up—we're all here to help each other!"
The music started, and Soul found himself moving along with the group. At first, he stumbled over the steps, but Keeho and the others cheered him on, their encouragement pushing him to try again.
After a few rounds of practice, they transitioned to the choreography for their upcoming performance. Jiung demonstrated a series of fluid dance moves, his body flowing seamlessly to the beat. Soul watched closely, trying to absorb every step.
"Now it's your turn, Soul!" Keeho called, gesturing for him to join in. Soul felt a wave of anxiety wash over him, but he knew he couldn't back down now.
With shaky legs, he stepped into the center of the group, taking a deep breath to steady himself. The music played again, and he focused on the rhythm, letting it guide him. As he danced, he felt the weight of his worries lift, the movements becoming more natural with each beat.
When the song ended, Keeho and the others erupted into applause. Soul's face flushed with pride. "You did great!" Jiung exclaimed, his eyes shining with excitement.
"Really?" Soul asked, surprised at their enthusiasm.
"Absolutely! You've got talent!" Intak added, giving him a thumbs-up.
Keeho stepped closer, his expression serious but kind. "See? You just needed to let yourself go. I knew you had it in you!"
Soul felt a rush of warmth at their praise. For the first time since arriving in Korea, he felt like he belonged. He could hardly believe how much he was enjoying himself.
As they continued to practice, laughter filled the studio, and Soul felt a sense of camaraderie with his new friends. Maybe this was exactly what he needed—a fresh start, new friendships, and a chance to pursue his passion.
By the end of practice, Soul was exhausted but exhilarated. As the group wrapped up, Keeho clapped him on the back. "I'm glad you came today, Soul. You're a part of our team now."
Soul couldn't help but smile. "Thanks, Keeho. I'm really happy I joined."
"Let's keep this momentum going! Tomorrow's practice will be even better," Keeho said, his excitement contagious.
As Soul headed home, he replayed the day in his mind. The laughter, the music, and the feeling of acceptance filled him with hope. Maybe this new chapter in his life was just beginning, and he couldn't wait to see where it would take him.
