Chapter 56: Facing the Challenges
The week following their sweet picnic passed in a flurry of excitement and nervous energy. Soul and Keeho's relationship had become the talk of the school, and while they enjoyed the newfound attention, it also brought unexpected challenges.
At lunch one day, Soul sat across from Keeho, who was animatedly recounting another funny story. But as the laughter died down, Soul couldn't help but feel the weight of their friends' stares. Jiung and Intak were exchanging knowing glances, while Jongseob appeared deep in thought.
"Hey, are you guys okay?" Soul asked, looking around the table.
"Yeah, we're good! Just thinking about how you and Keeho are basically the school's cutest couple now," Jiung teased, nudging Intak.
Keeho grinned, obviously loving the attention. "Right? We're basically the main event!"
"Just don't let it get to your head," Soul said, trying to keep his tone light, though he felt a flutter of anxiety in his stomach. He was still getting used to being the center of attention, especially in this new relationship.
As the lunch bell rang, they all stood to leave, but a group of girls from another table caught Keeho's eye. They were giggling and whispering, clearly watching him.
"Wow, Keeho! Looking good as always!" one of them called out, flashing a bright smile.
Soul felt an odd pang of jealousy at the compliment, even though he knew it was silly. Keeho, always charismatic, turned to them with a playful grin. "Thanks! But I've got my eyes on someone special," he replied, glancing at Soul with a wink.
Soul's heart raced at the gesture, but he couldn't shake the feeling of unease that lingered as they walked out of the cafeteria. The constant attention was starting to feel overwhelming.
"Are you okay?" Keeho asked softly, noticing Soul's quiet demeanor as they headed to their next class.
"Yeah, I'm fine," Soul replied, forcing a smile. "Just... getting used to all of this, I guess."
Keeho studied him for a moment, concern etched on his features. "If it ever gets too much, just let me know, alright? I want you to feel comfortable."
Soul nodded, appreciating Keeho's understanding. "I will. It's just... sometimes I feel like everyone is watching us."
"That's because they are!" Keeho laughed lightly, trying to lighten the mood. "But don't let it bother you. We're having fun, and that's what matters."
As the days went on, their relationship continued to be the center of attention, but so did the whispers and rumors. Soul overheard a couple of girls speculating about how long Keeho would actually stay interested, while some of the guys teased him about being "whipped."
One afternoon, after a particularly rough day, Soul found himself waiting for Keeho outside the gym after practice. The pressure was building, and he felt like he needed to talk to Keeho about it.
When Keeho finally emerged, he was still in his workout clothes, sweat glistening on his skin. Soul swallowed hard, momentarily distracted by how good he looked.
"Hey! Sorry I took so long," Keeho said, a bright smile on his face. "How was your day?"
Soul took a deep breath, trying to articulate his thoughts. "It was okay, but... I'm feeling kind of overwhelmed with everything. I didn't expect so much attention, you know?"
Keeho's expression shifted to concern. "I'm sorry, Soul. I didn't think about how it might affect you."
"I like being with you, but I don't want everyone judging us," Soul admitted, feeling vulnerable. "Sometimes it feels like they don't take us seriously."
Keeho stepped closer, gently taking Soul's hands in his. "You're right. But I want you to know that what we have is real to me. I don't care what anyone else thinks."
Soul looked up at Keeho, his heart swelling with affection. "Really?"
"Absolutely," Keeho replied firmly. "And I want us to be able to enjoy this without feeling like we have to prove anything to anyone."
"Okay," Soul said softly, feeling a weight lift off his shoulders. "I want that too."
Keeho grinned, relief washing over his face. "Good. So how about we ignore everyone else and focus on us? We can plan something fun for the weekend, just the two of us."
"Like what?" Soul asked, feeling a spark of excitement.
"Maybe we could go to that new arcade that just opened up? I hear they have a bunch of new games," Keeho suggested, his eyes shining with enthusiasm.
"Sounds perfect," Soul agreed, a smile creeping onto his face. "But I'm warning you, I'm going to crush you at racing games."
"Dream on!" Keeho laughed, playfully bumping shoulders with him as they began walking home together.
As they strolled through the park, hand in hand, the worries of the world faded away. The sun was setting, casting a warm glow around them, and Soul felt like they were in their own little bubble, far away from all the gossip and judgments.
Suddenly, Keeho stopped and turned to face Soul, a serious expression crossing his face. "Hey, I really mean it. I'm glad we're doing this together. You make me really happy."
Soul's heart fluttered at the sincerity in Keeho's voice. "You make me happy too."
Without another word, Keeho leaned in and captured Soul's lips in a soft kiss, the world around them fading into the background. In that moment, nothing else mattered; it was just the two of them, wrapped up in their own happiness.
