Chapter 16 - Cure

August walk into the soma chamber and finds Javier using his remaining time working on the somatic. And he has gotten it to work again. At least now the next crew can use it.

...

You're walking down the corridor when Ethan also comes around a corner and you both stop, looking at each other. He was heading for his room to watch the holo-video Jana had sent him. You were just wandering around, not sure what to do with yourself. You both slowly walk closer and stop in front of each other. He looks down with a sad expression.

"Yn, I'm.. I'm sorry, I-"

You stop him from finishing and caress his face to make him look at you.

"I know what I signed up on and I don't blame anyone." You comb your fingers through his hair on the side of his head and then wrap your arms around his neck, pulling him in for a hug. His strong arms envelop you as they wrap around your body.

Bernie and Julian try to make a cure. Julian injects himself to try it on someone without Bernie's resistance to the virus. He takes a few deep breath, and then soon start to feel the affect.

Then he gasps, groans and cough. He reaches to his neck. "The blister, it's already forming. The virus is accelerating."

"Okay, okay. What do I do? What do I do?" Bernie asks.

"Take my notes." Julian throws his tablet to him.

"What?" He asks and then looks up again and sees Julian running to the isolation room. "No, no, no!"

Julian closes and locks the door before he reaches him. "Press the button."

"No."

"You useless piece of shit. Do something for once in your life and press the-" He grunts in pain. "I'm a dead man anyway. Bernie! Press the button!"

With tears in his eyes Bernie presses the button. The airlock opens and Julian gets sucked out into space.

Ethan opens the door to the decontamination room before the airlock.

"Killer stars, earthquakes, and volcanic eruptions and were taken out by something we can't even see." He looks at everyone, his eyes lingering on you. "You guys deserve better than this."

Alone, Bernie now tries to make a cure. William comes to get him since everyone is getting ready. He walks closer to him, and then Bernie sees what happens to the virus.

Everyone walks into the room and you stand in two lines facing each other.

Michelle stops beside Ethan before going in. "I know I've been a pain in the ass.. more than a pain in the ass. I just want you to know that I-"

"If this is you apologising, we don't have much time."

She sighs. "I'm sorry."

"I'm sorry, too."

Ethan walks in last and turn to face the door. Being close to him, you reach out to brush your hand against his. He takes your hand, intertwining your fingers with his and takes a deep breath.
