Chapter 37 - Blame

Ethan grabs an axe from the wall and to try break the window on the door. It distracts Sasha for a second and Jason run up behind him. Using a rope, he chokes him. He drags him over to the door and scan his hand to unlock the door for Ethan. Ethan runs to Javier and drag him out.

"He got needles or blades or something coming out of his eyes!" Jason shouts, having seen what Sasha was doing to Beauchamp.

Ethan grab Jason and pull him out too. Once they're out, Sasha close the door and locks it.

"Sasha, why are you doing this?" Ethan asks him, looking at him through the window.

"How does it feel to be scared, Ethan? To feel useless? Powerless."

"Look, I am sorry.. that I didn't treat you the way that I should have. And I said things that.. I regret. You deserved better from me."

An alarm starts blaring.

"August, talk to me." Ethan says.

"Temperature in the particle accelerator is climbing into dangerous territory."

"Okay. Meet me there."

"She would, except she's stuck." Oliver says.

"Stuck where?"

"On the wrong side of a closed door."

"Yn? Zayn? Bernie?"

"We're in the lab. It's getting really hot." You answer. Then you hear a beep. "Ethan? Can you hear me?" You try but don't get an answer.

"Particle accelerator nearing critical temperature." An automatic voice says.

Ethan turns to Jason. "Sasha turned off the comms. He's cutting us off. Splitting us up." He says and goes to the scan screen by the door.

"But why?"

"Super conductivity degrading." The automatic voice announce.

"He's turned off the cooling system to the particle accelerator. If the core goes above its critical temperature.."

"We blow up." Jason finishes his sentence. "I don't understand. Why would they pick Sasha to do their dirty work?"

"He's exactly who I'd pick. Somebody lonely and vulnerable. Someone who's been hurt. Someone I hurt. Who they could easily turn against the mission.. I gotta get to August. Get her to the accelerator."

"Michelle died trying to shut that down."

"I know. We don't have a choice." Ethan says and move to go.

"What can I do?" Jason asks him.

"Stay with Beauchamp. Get him on oxygen. Find out everything you can about Sasha. We need to know his weaknesses."

"Okay."

Ethan gets to Oliver and helps him hold the door open enough for August to get through, using all their strength. It slams locked the second they let go after she got through.

"Okay. Let's move." Ethan says.

"No, we can't. The temperature is still rising on the lower decks. We won't make it to engineering. We'll cook." August tells him.

"Bernie's down there already." Oliver says.

"How are we supposed to communicate with Bernie and tell him what needs to be done if the comms are down?"

Oliver thinks for a moment. "We won't be using our comms."

"On the count of three, we open it, and we run." You say to Bernie and Zayn. "One.. two.. three!"
