Chapter 38 - Homicidal Bastard

Erik is approached by Dubois again. She tells him that Harper refuses to talk, but asks for him. Erik refuses because the Artifact attacked Jana, he tells her that Harper w have to talk to somebody else because he was done. Dubois tells him that she might not be Harper anymore and shows him a brain scan, it is similar to Sasha's.

"We've been looking for a way to communicate with the aliens. Seems like we finally have one." Dubious says.

Erik and Dubois enters the room where Harper is being held. Dubious gives Erik a script to read. Harper says that she's fine, saying that the implant on her brain wasn't put in by force. He asks some questions. She tells him that the aliens are called the Achaia.

Erik says he believes that the reason they chose Harper is because she has an audience.

Harper tells him that the energy surge was for the Achaia to protect themselves, but they didn't know Jana was nearby and the reason she is sick is because she has a genetic anomaly which makes her more vulnerable to ionising radiation, it harms her more than it does to other people. But when Harper says that the Achaia can cure her, Erik is dragged out of the room.

Bernie walks into the particle accelerator in a hazmat suit. He engages the cooling system. But Sasha turns it off again. Then Bernie hurriedly turn it on again and stab the wire with a screwdriver before Sasha can turn it back off. It electrocutes him. Sasha is unable to turn it back off.

When the cooling is back on you and Zayn run to the particle accelerator and find Bernie on the floor. He doesn't have a pulse so Zayn starts to do compression.

Sasha tries to turn off the oxygen, but is unable to do it. He then goes over to the sensor system and the alien uses its tech to access it. It then shows a hologram of the dark matter field on the table and Sasha turns to it. "Scan local quadrants.. Set course for-"

"Unauthorised activity detected in Somatic Chamber Two."

Ethan wakes up Azami in her soma tube.

"Commander? Why are you doing this manually?"

"It's okay. Just a couple more minutes, alright?"

"Ethan." Sasha says through the speakers. "Sure, Azami's a good software engineer, but she's no Javier. And untangling William? Well, that's gonna take more than being a good student. Accept it, Ethan. You can't win."

"Neither can you. Destroying the first ship we send out is a path that's lead to destruction."

"Commander? What's going on?" Azami asks.

"You've got all the destruction you need right here. Operation Brimstone? Tell me, did my father pick that name? It's why he chose you over Yerxa, isn't it? Cause he knew you'd have no problem executing that plan."

"I don't wanna hurt anyone."

"Bullshit."

"And you don't either. The real Sasha came on this mission because he thought he could broker peace."

"Peace? Since when do humans give a shit about peace? This ship can literally blow up an entire planet."

"We won't use it. I won't use it."

"Really? And I'm just supposed to believe you?"

"Yes. Because you know me."

"Yes, I do, Ethan. I do know you, and I know how you treat William. He would rather disappear into oblivion than feel the pain of feeling like nothing, no one, just a tool in your toolbox, by someone he considered a friend.. his best friend. Thank you for that." Sasha chuckles.

"You'd be killing a bunch of kids. You know that, right? Why kill them because of what might happen? The real Sasha wouldn't do that."

Sasha frowns. "I.. I don't have a choice."

"Yes, you do! This is a mistake that you can't take back."

"It's not me. It's them."

"Who? Who is 'them'?"

"It's the Achaia-Aahh!" The alien force back control over Sasha, to stop him.

"Okay. You tell the Achaia that we don't wanna fight, we don't wanna go to war. That's not who we are and why we are here. Destroying this ship, killing everyone on it.. Sasha you're gonna force humanity's hand."

"Cut oxygen to soma tube 1 dash 12: Azami Ouchi." Sasha says, the alien back in control.

"What!? No."

Azami starts gasping for air and knock on the glass desperately.

"Release the lock!" Ethan tries to open the tube but it won't open. He takes the axe and start striking at the glass to try and break it. "Think about your father. This is treason. Think for yourself for once in your life, Sasha. Come on, stand up for yourself."

Ethan can't break the glass and Azami dies from lack of oxygen.

"You homicidal bastard." He mutters angrily as he looks at Azami's dead body.

"Why delay the inevitable?"

Beauchamp finally starts to wake up. Jason is sitting on the table by him lying on the couch. He looks at him.

"Not the face I was hoping to wake up to."

"Nice to see you too, asshole." Jason tells him.

He then remembers what happened. "Sasha!" He dizzily tries to get up but Jason stops him.

"Hey, whoa, whoa, whoa. Easy."

"He's got something in his head."

"We know. Do you know anything else?"

"He was, uh, searching in my brain.. for weaknesses in our defences, anything he could use.. He's gonna destroy us."

"Alright. Let's go find Ethan and figure out how to get that asshole off the ship."

"Now you're talking."

They get up and Jason walks, but Beauchamp struggles slightly. "A little help?"

"Yeah, come on." Jason goes back and helps him walk.

Ethan walks angrily down the hall with the axe. Suddenly the ship jerks.

"FTL engines engaged." The Salvare announces.

He curses and start running.
