It was 6:00am and I was lying in bed beside Liam, both of us still fast asleep. At 40 weeks pregnant with our third child—a little girl, our first daughter—I felt a mix of anticipation and peace. Our oldest, Bear, had just turned four on March 22, and our second-born, Justin, was nearly two, with his birthday coming up on August 29. Both boys were peacefully asleep in their rooms.
Suddenly, I woke with a start. Something felt different. I shifted slightly, and as I looked down, I realized my water had broken.
"Oh no, it's happening," I whispered to myself, my heart racing with excitement and nerves.
Quickly, I turned to Liam, gently shaking his shoulder. "Liam, wake up," I said, my voice trembling. "My water broke. Baby girl's coming!"
Liam's eyes flew open, blinking as he registered what I'd said. He sat up instantly, all traces of sleep gone. "Are you sure?" he mumbled, but his tone was already alert.
"Yes, I'm sure," I replied, feeling the urgency build. "We need to go. Call the hospital and my parents. We need someone to watch the boys."
He leapt out of bed, grabbing his phone. He dialed the hospital first. "Hi, this is Liam Payne. My wife's water just broke, and we're coming in for delivery."
After confirming everything with the hospital, he called my mom. "Hi, Lorelei. Maya's water broke, and we're heading to the hospital. Can you and David come watch Bear and Justin? They're both still asleep, so if you could keep them calm when they wake up, that'd be perfect."
My mom's voice was warm and full of excitement. "We'll be there soon, honey! Don't worry about a thing."
He smiled reassuringly at me. "Your parents are on their way. The hospital's ready for us. Let's get you packed up, yeah?"
I nodded, feeling both excitement and nerves. "Okay. Let's do this."
Liam helped me out of bed and got me into comfortable clothes. The contractions hadn't started yet, but I could feel the weight of the moment settling in. I heard a soft voice from down the hall. "Mummy? Daddy?" It was Bear, sleepy-eyed and curious.
Liam walked over to him and whispered, "Hey, buddy, everything's okay. Mummy's going to the hospital to have the baby. Do you want to say goodbye?"
Bear yawned. "Is the baby coming now?"
Liam chuckled softly. "Yeah, she's on her way. You're going to have a little sister!"
Bear's eyes lit up, even in his sleepy state. "Cool! Will you bring her to me?"
"We will," Liam said, pressing a kiss to his forehead before coming back to me.
"Bear's all settled," Liam grinned. "Now, let's get you to the car, Maya."
As I took his hand, a sudden contraction hit, and I gripped his hand, breathing deeply.
"You okay?" he asked, concern in his voice.
"Yeah," I whispered, exhaling slowly. "Just... breathe with me?"
He held my hand and mirrored my breaths. "I'm with you. Always."
By the time we arrived at the hospital, my contractions were steady and intense. The staff was ready and quickly ushered us into a delivery room. Liam stayed by my side, his hand never leaving mine, offering calm words of encouragement through each push. Finally, at 7:22 a.m., a soft cry filled the room.
