Sophie's Point of View
I stood in the bathroom I shared with Niall, gripping the edge of the counter for support as I stared at my reflection in the mirror. My face looked pale, almost ghostly. Dark circles clung stubbornly beneath my eyes, and my skin had lost the healthy glow it usually carried. I swallowed hard, trying to will the queasiness away, but the twisting knot in my stomach only tightened. This wasn't just exhaustion or a fleeting sickness—it felt different.
A sudden wave of nausea hit me hard, and I barely made it to the toilet before it overwhelmed me. As I knelt on the cold tile floor, waiting for the sickness to pass, my mind raced.
This is exactly how I felt when I found out I was pregnant with Sarah.
The memory was vivid. It was late 2017, a few months before I learned we were going to be parents for the first time. Then, in 2019, the same feelings came back when I discovered I was pregnant with Camryn. Both times had been marked by this unshakable nausea and a gnawing sense that something was different.
Now, here I was again.
Once I felt steady enough, I pushed myself off the floor and stumbled to the cabinet. My hands trembled as I rummaged through the neatly organized shelves until I found what I was looking for—a pregnancy test.
I stared at the small box in my hands for a moment, my heart pounding.
Am I ready for this? I thought, though deep down, I already knew the answer.
I opened the test and followed the steps methodically, trying to ignore the hammering in my chest. Once finished, I set the test down on the counter and grabbed my phone to set a five-minute timer.
With nothing to do but wait, I made my way to the bed Niall and I shared. The quiet of the house felt almost eerie without Sarah and Camryn's usual laughter filling the air. Niall had taken them to the park so I could have some time to rest. He'd been so thoughtful lately, noticing how tired and off I'd been these past few weeks.
I sank into the comfort of the bed, pulling the duvet up around me, and closed my eyes, trying to steady my thoughts.
A few minutes later, the sound of the timer jolted me from my thoughts. My stomach flipped as I got up and made my way back to the bathroom.
"Okay, Sophie," I whispered to myself, my voice shaky. "Let's see."
I picked up the test, my breath catching in my throat as I read the result.
Two lines. Positive.
I blinked, staring at the test to make sure I wasn't imagining it. A wave of emotions washed over me: shock, joy, nervousness, and overwhelming love.
Just as I was processing the result, I heard the familiar sound of the front door opening. Niall's voice floated upstairs, cheerful and full of warmth.
"We're back!" he called. "Sarah insisted on collecting every leaf in the park, and Camryn—well, let's just say the swings are her new favorite thing."
I clutched the test tightly in my hand, suddenly overwhelmed with the thought of sharing the news. Taking a deep breath, I tucked the test into my pocket and made my way downstairs.
Niall stood in the hallway, holding Camryn in one arm while Sarah chattered away at his side. The sight of him, his eyes lighting up as he looked at me, filled my heart.
"Hey, love," he said, smiling. "How are you feeling?"
I hesitated for a moment before stepping closer, placing a hand on his arm.
