The morning sun filtered through the windows of the kitchen, casting warm rays onto the countertop as Jeonghan moved about efficiently. He was preparing lunch for Seungcheol, carefully packing a homemade bento box. It was something he loved doing whenever his husband had to spend the day at the office—his way of showing love and appreciation. Today's menu was simple but hearty: rice, grilled chicken, steamed broccoli, and a side of sliced fruits.
From the living room came the familiar sound of cartoon characters chattering away, mixed with occasional bursts of giggles from Sumin and squeals of delight from Seowon. Jeonghan glanced over his shoulder, peeking into the living room. The two boys were seated on the soft play mat, their eyes glued to the TV. Sumin was enthusiastically holding his stuffed dinosaur, occasionally making it "dance" to the show's theme song, while Seowon sat in his baby walker, bouncing lightly and clapping his hands to the music.
"Boys, are you being good for Appa?" Jeonghan called out playfully as he wiped his hands on a dish towel.
"Yes, Appa!" Sumin replied, his little voice full of energy. "We're watching the funny animals!"
Jeonghan chuckled, feeling a wave of affection for the sight of his sons so content and happy. He put the finishing touches on Seungcheol's lunch, wrapping the bento in a cloth for easy carrying. As he placed it in the fridge to keep it fresh until Seungcheol left, he mentally ran through the list of things he needed to do that day: laundry, playtime, lunch for the kids, and perhaps even a quick cleanup of the playroom if time allowed.
He walked over to the living room, taking a moment to sit beside Sumin on the floor. "What are we watching here?" he asked, pretending to be as enthralled as his toddler.
"Funny animals, Appa! Look, the lion is talking!" Sumin pointed excitedly at the screen, his eyes wide with wonder.
Jeonghan gasped dramatically, playing along. "A talking lion? That's amazing! And what about you, Seowon? Are you enjoying the show?"
Seowon responded with a happy squeal, flailing his tiny arms in excitement.
Jeonghan laughed and ruffled Sumin's hair before standing. "Alright, you two. Be good while I finish getting things ready, okay?"
Heading back into the kitchen, Jeonghan began preparing breakfast for himself and the kids. He toasted some bread, scrambled eggs, and cut up fruit into bite-sized pieces. For Seowon, he blended a quick fruit puree, knowing it was one of his favorites.
Just as he was setting the plates on the table, Seungcheol walked in, adjusting his tie. He looked sharp in his crisp white dress shirt and dark slacks, the perfect image of professionalism.
"Smells amazing," he said, leaning down to kiss Jeonghan on the cheek.
"Gotta keep you well-fed," Jeonghan replied with a smile, handing him a travel mug filled with coffee. "Your lunch is in the fridge. Don't forget it."
Seungcheol nodded and took a sip of his coffee, his eyes crinkling at the corners as he smiled. "Thanks, love. How are the boys doing?"
"Still mesmerized by their cartoons," Jeonghan replied with a chuckle.
Seungcheol glanced into the living room, where the kids were still engrossed in their show. "Good luck with them today. I'll be back as soon as I can."
Before leaving, Seungcheol planted a kiss on both his sons' cheeks and gave them hugs.
Jeonghan walked him to the door, waving goodbye as Seungcheol headed off to work. Closing the door, he turned to face the day ahead.
