"I don't hate you, I love you. But loving you is killing me. So this is goodbye even if I don't want it to be."

Author's Pov: After a Year

It had been a year since your sentencing, and the days passed in a monotonous rhythm within the prison walls. The weight of you actions and the verdict still lingered in your mind, but the thought of your sister being safe gave you solace. The first thing you did after being sentenced was to tell Eunwoo where to find your sister. You made him promise to care for Iseul and never let her feel alone again.

Eunwoo kept his word. He kept updating you about Iseul slow but steady recovery, letting you know that she was beginning to get well. And it became a beacon of hope, something that gave you the strength to endure the long days in confinement.

The harsh clang of the prison bell echoed through the halls, signaling the start of another day, but for you, it felt heavier. You had been watching Mrs. Lee deteriorate for months. Her frail body had lost its vitality, and her once wise, piercing eyes were now dulled with exhaustion, she had grown weaker with each passing month. Her cancer, already in its final stages, was relentless. Yet, she carried herself with quiet dignity, never complaining, never asking for more than the bare minimum.

You, however, bore a different weight—a secret so profound that it gnawed at you every day. You had promised Jin-Hyuk, in his last moments, that you would never tell his mother the truth. The truth that her beloved son, the only remaining family she had in the world, was no longer alive.

Even now, the memory of his broken, vulnerable state and the tear-streaked look of a man trapped by his demons was fresh. Jin-Hyuk wasn't evil by choice; he was a victim of his own fractured mind. You hated him for what he had done to you and Iseul, yet you understood the depth of his love for his mother. His final plea wasn't for redemption or forgiveness—it was for her.

The prison's daily routine continued as usual. The clang of metal doors echoed through the corridors, and you joined your cellmates for breakfast in the dining hall. Over time, you had formed a quiet camaraderie with the others.

Soo-ah: Didn't Mrs.Lee came to have her breakfast?

Eun-bi: She told me she would be here in few minutes but she is not here yet.

You noticed that Mrs. Lee hadn't come down for breakfast. A growing sense of unease gripped you as you asked the guard for permission to check on her. When you entered the cell, the sight before you made you freeze. Mrs. Lee was lying on her bunk, her face pale but serene. Her chest rose and fell faintly, each breath labored and shallow.
