"(Y/N)." I heard my name called. I turn around to see Yamato making his way to me. I gave him a smile as he closed the distance.

"Hi." He beamed with a giant smile on his face while rubbing the back of his neck. I was used to seeing Yamato bashful in front of me. His crush was no secret. It hadn't been in all the years I had known him but I was scared to cross that line with him. Yamato was attractive but we were good friends and I didn't want to loose that.

I first met Yamato when we both worked in the ANBU. I was there the day he first came out of the root. Back when he was known as Tenzo.

And I was there as he found himself. I had joined him on many successful missions. Yamato was so efficient and business oriented. I did not want to be a distraction to him regardless of my feelings.

I would be lying if I didn't admit my feelings were just as strong as his. I was just better at hiding them. Because I didn't want to loose him as a friend if anything went poor between us. Having him in my life was more important.

"Hey." I smiled back at him. "Did you just get back?" Recently he been working with Kakashi's team. He started as an interim sensei while Kakashi got better but eventually turned into helping train the team. That meant he spent longer stints out of the village but also meant he had become a crucial member of the village where he could finally be recognized for his work. I was so proud of him. But I missed him when he was gone.

I was still in the ANBU and often felt like he left me behind. We no longer got missions together and I missed him dearly.

"Yes. I was just on my way to the tower to report back. What about you honey?" We started walking in step together towards the Hokage Tower.

"Same. Just arrived from another mission." I glanced over at him to find his eyes watching me more intently than he was to his steps forward.

"And how was it?" Yamato asked casually.

"You know better than to ask me dork." I laughed.

"Hey I can't help it. I want to know what's going on in my best friends life." He threw an arm around my shoulder as he pulled me in playfully. But the words still stuck out to me. Best friend. That's what we were and what we would stay.

"And what about you best friend?" I teased. "How was your mission?"

"Didn't go as planned." He let out a deep sigh. "These kids are running me wild." Yamato shook his head slightly while his fingers came up to rub his temple.

"Well you remember what it was like to be young and dumb once right." I laughed at him remembering all the stupid shit we got into.

"But not like this." Yamato shook his head again. "I would have never done that shit."

"And what's that Yam?"

"Sakura came after us. Claiming she actually loved Naruto. It reeked of bullshit. After all these years everyone knows her feelings for Sasuke but she felt if she said it Naruto would stop putting himself at risk by chasing after Sasuke. It's not all about her you know. Naruto goes after Sasuke for his own personal feelings. It has very little to do with her. It was hard to stand by and hear her lies."

"Did he believe her?" I questioned out of curiosity.

"Thankfully no. But I just can't wrap my head around why she thought that was the right thing to do."

"Because you have never been a teenage girl Yam. She did what she thought was right to protect the people she loves. She is worried about him and it was a desperate way to get him to realize it. Even if it's not the way he would have wanted. She loves Naruto and wants the best for him."
