"Madara baby." I whispered with a groan. He had been tossing and turning for what felt like hours. I was finally getting tired of him keeping me up.
"I'm sorry love." Madara whispered. He quickly pulled me in close to cuddle now that he was well aware of how awake he was keeping me.
"What's keeping you up?" I asked as I brushed some of his long hair off his face. My fingers continued to play with the hair at the base of his head.
"It's nothing love." Madara kissed the tip of my nose.
"It's something baby. What is it?" My thumb caressed his cheek.
"I don't want to talk about it." Madara avoided my eye contact so I crawled in closer to him and laid my head on his chest. His arms snaked around my body as he held me close.
"You've been so moody lately. Talk to me baby. I'm your wife. I'm here for you."
"I know love." Madara let out a deep sigh. "I don't know where to start."
I stayed quiet so Madara could find his words without feeling pressure from me. The silence lasted so long I almost drifted back to sleep.
"I'm not happy." Madara finally spoke. I knew this. I had seen the change in him probably longer than he even recognized his own feelings.
I knew life wasn't that same for my husband the second his brother passed. As hard as he tried to fake it and adjust to our new life. I knew my husband. I knew he wasn't happy.
But I was thankful he was finally acknowledging it. "With what?" I asked in order to keep the momentum of him opening up.
"Everything." He huffed out. Madara let go of my body so he could flop back on the bed.
"I thought this was what I wanted but it's nothing like I expected. We are treated like shit. And for what? We are not any better here than we were on our own. What difference does this village make?"
"To protect the next generation." I repeated the mantra that brought different clans together. The vision that was instilled for a brighter future.
"But not for us." Madara muttered.
"What do you mean love?" I asked as I turned my body so I was once again cuddled into his side. My fingers lazily traced up and down his bare chest.
"Our clan. We are outcasted. Don't you see that?"
"No." I was honest with my husband.
"What do you mean you don't see it." Madara sat up abruptly. "We have been pushed in the corner. Literally on the outskirts of the village as if we aren't good enough to fit in. And than forced to be the ones that enact compliance with the new rules. We are the bad guys. It's a narrative being pushed on our people to make us look bad. To push us out. We are a strong clan and I can already foresee this way of life will make us the enemy."
"Madara my love." I cradled his face in my hands after I sat up with him. "I don't think it's that deep."
"But it will be." Madara looked away from me as he tore his face from my hands.
"You worry too much love." I repositioned myself to sit on his lap so he was forced to acknowledge me. Once our eyes locked I spoke again.
"They say if life gives you lemons then make lemonade. But I think if you don't like the lemons then rip the fucking lemon trees out. If your lemons are sour, do something about it. Take the lemon tree out and plant a new one. Plant apples or tangerines for fucks sake. But do what makes you happy and don't blame the lemon trees."
