True to his words, Hawks stopped updating me from then on.
All I could do was try to squint and strain to see what little I could from a distance. Even so I had no idea what was going on within that labyrinth of a hideout.
So when a giant sinkhole opened up in the intersection to the left of the hideout, I could finally make out the gist of what happened.
A blob of green soon flew out of the hole.
'Midoriya... and that girl with him must be... Eri!'
This girl was the central focus of this entire operation.
It seemed that the Shie Hassaikai had used her blood and tissue to create their quirk erasure bullets.
Th poor girl must have suffered a lot.
Then, I saw a red mass follow after them.
"Hawks!" I yelled at the man who had made nary a sound the entire time. "What is that?!"
He hesitated before speaking.
"Overhaul has turned himself into some kind of... monster."
'Overhaul?'
That man had a quirk not unsimilar to mine.
He could break down anything, living or not, into pieces and reconstruct it anyway he wished.
I couldn't do that, not to anything living at least.
If I used my quirk to disintegrate a piece of wood by pumping my energy into it, sure I could form it into another shape but the material itself has been compromised. It cork, compressed sawdust now, not wood.
The same went for living things.
Back in my month of 'attitude adjustment' I was made to work on small animals.
Frankly it was sickening, I could hardly get through one of those days without throwing my guts up.
Through that I learnt that I could take things apart, mold them, liquify them, reshape them with ease, but ultimately... they'd still be dead.
A misshapen, fused together pile of offal, flesh and bones.
Or more often than not, they'd simply disappear into a cloud of blood splatter.
'In a way, his quirk is more heroic than mine will ever be...'
But as I watched the fight from afar I grew anxious, watching Deku's green hair get smothered every few seconds only to reappear elsewhere.
A few times I began to think he wouldn't.
Until finally, he launched the oversized villain into the sky.
And just like that... it was over.
I could hardly believe it.
I was flooded with relief, exhaustion and...
guilt.
Guilt for having sat there and watched as my friends risked their lives, as heroes were carted away in ambulances while I was perfectly unharmed.
"Don't look so down Dove," Hawks placed a hand on my shoulder.
"It's time to get to work."
