That day had been one of the happiest in Ryo's life.

It was nothing but good.

Filled with precious memories of his friends.

And the sweet taste of crepe.

-

Until it soured.

-

To explain, we have to go back to just before the class headed back to the dorms.

Our three protagonists were side by side, silently munching on crepes as they took the hike up the hill.

Ryo had been humming, whether consciously or not, under his breath.

"You sound happy," Shoto breaks the silence with a whisper.

Ryo blinks before his hand covers his mouth.

"Ah, I didn't even realise."

Katsuki scoffs, "are you that happy about a school festival?"

"Duh," the white-haired boy rolled his eyes.

"It was my first festival."

The boys paused but Ryo carried on a few paces, turning around after he'd felt their presence disappear from beside him.

"What?" he asked cluelessly.

You see, to the two boys, one who's life had been full of a cruel family life and daddy issues; and the other filled with a deep inferiority complex and a childhood friend who constantly reminded him of such, Ryo felt like a breath of fresh air.

The way he was always smiling, beaming like the warmth of the sun shining down upon them.

His energy charged a room, leaving it at a pleasant, constant hum.

His cheesy jokes, just to be expected from him.

He was always happy.

Ryo is always happy.

So when they are reminded that this happiness had been met with such sorrow, it was incomprehensible.

Ryo was so happy you could never even think of him and sadness being in the same sentence.

Oil and water, it didn't mix.

-

Until you shake it.

You shake it so hard that for a split second the substances blend into one.

And for a split second, Katsuki and Shoto were shaken so hard that the link between Ryo and his sadness could be seen.

He had no family, he had no memory of most of his life, he hadn't even recalled ever going to a school before UA, let alone a school festival.

"What are you guys staring at?" the boy huffs, stuffing the rest of his crepe in his mouth before grabbing at both of their arms, dragging them up the hill.

And just like that, the split second passes.

Because he is happy.

Ryo is happy.

And that washes all the sadness away.

"Don't drag me you damn Bumpkin," Katsuki hisses, shaking the boy off.

He storms a few paces forward before turning to glare at the pair still holding hands. It seemed Shoto had absolutely no issue being lugged around.

The blonde huffs and snatches Ryo's hand once more, this time he led the charge back up the hill.
