Maybe They Forgot
I did not dare turn around. I stiffened slightly, watching the faces of the pack before me. They were loyal to their Alpha, showing their respect - thought this gesture would not be so visible to humans, only to our kind.
I did not want to show disrespect to an Alpha, despite their rank being lower than mine. Respect was of the upmost importance in my family, no matter who the person was. Everyone deserved some respect unless the proved otherwise.
I turned around to lay eyes on the figure that spoke. Matthew Reilly was the tallest of the pack, towering six feet at the least. Short dark brown hair lay upon his head, his chocolate brown eyes and light tan skin. He was built as an Alpha would be. He observed me as I observed him, taking in every feature, seeing if the other was any threat.
I cocked an eyebrow at him and he cracked a smile.
“Matthew Reilly,” he introduced himself, “Pleasure to finally meet the new kid.”
“Pleasure is all mine,” I said joking.
“Viola, am I right?” he questioned already knowing the answer.
“Yes, Viola,” I played along.
“If you don’t mind, I’ll meet you later,” he continued.
I raised an eyebrow again, “Later? Where may I ask?”
“You know,” is all he replied.
Swiftly, the pack got up from sitting and followed behind their Alpha as he walked away without another word. A small smile fell onto my face, I had passed the test.
But just as that smile came, a small frown took over. Did they know yet?
“Whoa baby,” Lilith nudged me, “Someone’s got a little somethin’ somethin’.”
“Wait, what?” I asked confused.
“You, Matt,” she stated. I gave her a look of confusion that told her to go on, “You guys were totally flirting!”
“Oh, that wasn’t flirting!” I laughed.
“Sure, looked like flirting to me,” she muttered as if she didn’t get the secret joke between Matthew and I. Well, she didn’t.
The lunch bell rang and Daniel and I made our way to Art class. This was the only class I didn’t have to introduce myself in front of because, well one, the whole school already knew about me I supposed, and two, the teacher was not even there. Daniel and I spent the class eating food and laughing about everything.
I had sixth period with Lilith, and we sat in the back. For some reason, a faint smell lingered in this room. I had sniffed it earlier around school but didn’t get a good enough scent. It smelt familiar in a way, like something I didn’t know I had forgotten. I shrugged it off as nothing, since I saw no threat. But once role was taken, the teacher called out a name that sent shivers down my back for whatever reason. Claude.
I asked Lilith about him, and in return she shrugged. She said he was just some attractive guy that most girls fell head over heels for, but that he wasn’t a good guy.
I shrugged off the shiver that ran down my spine earlier. Must’ve been the cold, I reassured myself.
After school ended, I had given my number to Lilith and Daniel, to make plans sometime this week and for tomorrow at school. I had been really lucky to meet two people as great as them. They were nice and they were good people. Funny people too, might I add.
After I left school, I had went to get school supplies and a book bag, and left the money I owed to the poor little shop I broke into. Once I arrived home, I settled my things and took a nice, hot shower to relax my muscles before meeting with the pack later tonight.
I had known what Matthew meant when all he told me was, “You know”. There was one place our kind could meet peacefully without humans around like at school, or around town, and that was the forest.
After my shower, I dried my hair and looked at the clock that read 6pm. I made way down into my kitchen in nothing but a towel and opened the back door. Inside my home, I began to change. My body grew hot as my bones began breaking and reforming themselves. I was covered in fur and now had a snout and two pointed ears. My tail wagged behind me as my paw hit my cold kitchen floor.
A soft whimper left me because of the pain. I shook my entire body, my brown, thick fur swiftly moving around, before darting into my backyard playfully. I rolled around in the grass as the sun finally set. I sat up, listening fo the howl indicating for me to go into the forest.
On cue, I heard the Alpha howl. I darted forward jumping over the fence separating my backyard and the forest and retreated into the shaded darkness. My snout lifted into the air, taking in my surroundings before going any closer. I caught their scent almost instantly and ran, darting trees left and right.
When I arrived to where they were, I came into the moonlight for them to see me in my changed form. The moonlight danced on my brown, thick fur, my paw black as night and my eyes still the same fascinating green-blue color.
The Alpha moved forward, his fur thick but short with a mixture of dark browns. He was a massive wolf, but surprisingly I met his size. He seemed perplexed by this, and circled around me observing me. After minutes, he moved forward and sniffed me before laying his snout on my back, a sign of acceptance.
I eased up, and observed the other beings around us. I noticed the Beta for his almost massive size matching up the Alpha, I was bigger than him though. A white furred being sat next to him, instantly I knew it was Nick because of his small size. A dirty white furred being sat next to him, and I recognized him as Sam. Next was Brett and Thomas, looking quite the same besides one being darker than the other.
I had always admired our kind when we are changed, for we hold the beauty of a wolf. My kind does not change into a wolf, we are werewolves, much larger than the average wolf and much stronger, faster, and more cunning.
The Alpha broke into a howl, which we all joined in on. The crescent moon above lit up the forest to a degree, our night vision letting us see what the moon couldn’t show.
Slowly, the pack began to play. Messing around by chasing each other and fighting. I sat back and watched curiously. Maybe they forgot who I was? Why weren’t they bombarding me with questions? Maybe they forgot.
The thought had me wagging my tail as I barked and joined in. This meant I would have another day or so to enjoy this, then I could tell them who I was. I was not avoiding telling them my true identity. Well, maybe a little. But it was only because I wanted a few days of being normal. Things were going good, actually great, and it was only the first days.
A part of me told me that they knew, despite them being how they were with me, they knew my true identity. My name had been all over the school today, they couldn’t avoid hearing it. The last name Diamond was rare, as in only my family held that title. They could have taken it as a coincidence, that I wasn’t actually me and this was just some crazy coincidence, but that was ignorant and very stupid.
I would tell them upfront who I was.
But not today.
Not right now.
Everything came with ease in Riverdale, and I did not want to mess it up just yet. I wanted to enjoy the normalcy of it all, something I was not accustomed to but found comfort in.
Tomorrow, I thought.
